I have two samples of the 70-200, and they are both spectacular on the d300. The articles you refer to are regarding that lens on the D3. I find it works quite well on the D3, but there is some corner softness at certain focal lengths.

For me, either works as a wonderful supplement to my Leicas.

We didn't agree on bagging the M8, and I love my M7, but I'm totally with you on the Zeiss 50 makro. I love this lens, when I got it for the D3 it became my favorite 50, certainly for an SLR and even compared to the leica 50 1.4 asph. It's close focusing makes it amazingly flexible, and it has a gorgeous fingerprint. best...Peter

Interesting thread.

My M8s aren't going anywhere. After an endless month-upon-month sojourn at the Solms' Service Spa, I'd like to actually use them for awhile ... although I WILL NOT ever rely on them exclusively. Lost trust is lost trust.

However, I have swapped DSLR systems from Canon to Nikon as my main wedding kit. I don't think I've shot an ambient image with the D3 under ISO 2000 yet ... LOL. The new 24-70/2.8 Zoom blows away Canon's version ... which was a lens I loved to hate. And I agree, the Nikon 200/2 is simply state of the art.

As I wait for Nikon's bigger FF gun to come out and prove itself for awhile, I got a D300 for a wedding application back-up. By adding a ZF 28/2, 50/2 and 100/2 it also transformed it into a serious small kit for personal work ... two fast macros and accurate framing with the Zeiss 28 using the overlay grid, make for one heck of a versatile kit. 10X Live View for Macro work is a revelation, (as it was on the Canons.)

While not as demure in size compared to the M8, it's no lumbering, shoulder slumping, child frightening DSLR either. Considering it's features, superb flash control, and very nice choice of Zeiss optics with focus confirmation in-viewfinder ... it's a real consideration as a M8 surrogate ... for a King's ransom less in costs.

BTW, those that think M8 images are Medium Format like, I suggest renting a MF outfit for a weekend and get back to us on that opinion : -)
