Hello,
I am late to the game here. Is it possible to still contribute? This project sounds awesome!

Is there a title for the book? How about something like:
M8 Visions, A Digital Revolution! The Photography of the Leica User Forum Members. Just a thought. Cheers, Wilfredo+ Benitez-Rivera Photography |

As for the pictures, i'm still sorting out, hopefully i have some that look as good as the images that i often sees in this forum. |

Daniel Ortego just posted in the photo thread, #159, saying "perhaps it will be considered" for the book.
Sorry for the confusion. It's hard to be clear and brief. Again the rules are in post #30. And, if you post in the Anniversary thread in the photo forum, you can be in the book. Following the may 15th deadline, I will make a list of all contributors to the photo thread and contact them: 1. To confirm the images that will be printed, 2. To arrange for transfer of a hi-res copy, 3. To get model releases, where necessary, and 4. To get supporting data for the image(s). You all know the joke about the photographer and the cook. The cook said, "Your photos are beautiful. What camera do you use?" The Photog replied, "I like your food too. What pans do you use?" So, in the vein of the joke, I note that the only common thing among all the beautiful photos in the Anniversary Thread is the camera. These people aren't even in the same city!

Oops! The link is filling up with so many photos that I can no longer open it. I only have 2gb of memory so its starting to choke my MacBook Pro.

In which case Daniel there's something wrong with either your MacBook or your ISP. I have a MacBook (not Pro) with 2 gig of memory and the page loads without any problem.
One potential problem I can see is Bill's insistence on a model release form. There are a lot of shots of people and quite a few of them seem to be of strangers un-posed. Unless the photographer obtained a release when the shot was taken, or can find the person before the middle of May, then they won't be eligible for the book. In fact that's the reason why at the moment I'm not going to participate, I don't have releases for any of my photographs.

Steve, if you have taken pictures of people in public places, that's legit. We'll need a model releases for portraits that were taken of individuals in private places.
For example, posting #3, from HUWGE, will need a model release from the subject. Posting #8, form Philippe D. will need a model release from a parent of this child. I would characterize these pictures as private pictures of a recognizable individual. Will you be posting an image, Steve?

I may well do in that case Bill.
The problem I have is that the images I was thinking of posting are from the Crufts dog show, and they weren't taken in a public place - they're from an exhibition centre. I should be able to come up with alternatives though.

Steve, even if you purchased tickets to an event, it's still a public place. It wasn't someone's own property, was it?
Go ahead and post. I'll check my book on photography and the law. Regards,

The need for obtaining model releases has nothing to do with where photographs are taken. It is all about what usage the photographs are being used for - i.e. whether for commercial/advertising or editorial purposes. Books fall into the latter category and images used for that purpose do not require releases.

Thank you, Ian. Do you have a reference for me that applies to US law? How does one make sure a book meets the "editorial" test?
(I'm really chicken.)

Going from the section below, taken from this website:
Publication of Photographs: Is A Release Required? I think we need releases for photos of individuals taken in private places. Here is the text from the site: Guidelines when Publishing Photographs of Individuals Because there are many nuances to the right of privacy and publicity laws it is advisable to always obtain a written release from any individual that would be recognized in a photograph. Obtain a release even if the individual's image will initially be used for a newsworthy purpose in the event that you may want to use the individual's photograph for other trade or commercial uses. Don't forget that if the individual is a minor, you will need parental or guardian consent. Make certain you caption the photograph correctly. Be careful when cropping a photograph that you do not alter the context in which the photograph was taken. If you decide to use a photograph without a release make certain it was obtained without trespassing on private property, that it does not violate an individual's right of privacy or publicity or that it is protected by a First Amendment use. Releases are generally not required from people who are identifiable in a photograph of a street or public place, provided that the photograph is reasonably related to the subject matter and the identifiable people are not the focus of the photograph. An example of a permitted use would be a photograph of the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink that was used to illustrate a book about Rockefeller Center or about New York City attractions, even though many people may be identifiable.

Post #38 contains sample releases for both adults and minors.
Anyone have any thoughts about how we will copyright this book? How about we say: Copyright 2008, members of the Leica User Forum Do you suppose we need permission for Leica to say this? And do we need a more identifiable entity for this purpose?
