Interesting - and broadly what I expected after what you said about leaving the M8 to "cool" in a parked car (which unless you left with the windows wide open would take a while to reach ambient temperature) and carrying it some of the time under a parka.

Does anyone know for sure why the temperature is recorded in the makernotes? I guess one reason is so that if an image from extreme conditions shows problems, Leica can say "Sorry, you were outside the temperature range we support, better luck next time." But do RAW processors factor the temperature into their calculations?

Sounds like a bit more cold weather testing is needed by Nikon.
Perhaps they should talk to Phase One:

What an enjoyably silly thread.

We can remind ourselves about whether the new Nikons work in the cold or not by checking Moose Peterson's blog, and his work with the D3 in Yellowstone Park in mid winter:

To be honest, this whole thread is idiotic. Denying that the Nikons in the articles failed is as pathetically ridiculous as claiming that all Nikons will fail. Clearly the truth for Nikon, as for every other camera out there, including Leica, is that some fail, and some don't. Nikons are good cameras, but perfect they are not. The guy in the article must have had some truly horrible luck to have all the cameras fail he tried. Statistically, this is probably nearly inconceivable.

Well, so sorry to post such an "idiotic" thread, but my point in doing so was that folks on this forum are incredibly quick to assume that any failing by a Leica product is an indication of the armageddon and that if they were only as good as "....." we would all live in paradise.

Fact is if it's made by man it can fail.

I would agree Dan, if the only failing the M8 had was temporary freeze ups at minus twenty five.

Possibly... but what can you do with a camera which makes failure acceptable? Remember, this is a professional photographer who knows how to use cameras, and who prefers them not to break.

I don't have any problem with the starting of this thread, although the title could have been more neutral (this title is very "hey look everyone, other cameras can break", which really doesn't need pointing out). What almost everyone has contributed to the thread is junk though. Arguing about whether 6 cameras can fail or not is pointless, since we don't know what really happened, and likely never will. Defending or attacking Nikon or Leica (or Canon...) is also totally pointless. The facts speak for themselves, and all cameras can break. Without real statistics, we will never know the real reasons.

And even then: who rated them worse than damn lies...?

One's own experience counts, and no one elses.
