Default Black Dot

Wondering if anyone had switched or come up with conversion from Red to Black on the M8?

Henry,

Carsten Whimster managed to change his M8's red dot to a black dot and described it in this thread:

I used matt black model paint, a very fine brush and a moderately steady hand, painting over the whole dot and then using a card to wipe the paint off the lettering. On a silver body, substitute a very steady hand - or do it Carsten's way.

i believe DAG sells black dots that will fit the M8, which i suppose is a more elegant solution to making it less noticable than what i've done; covering it with black tape.

I used a mat black vinyl lettering material to cover both the M8 and the red Leica. I thought that it made the camera more generic and ancient looking and hence less of a risk for theft. It still takes great pictures even if people don't know it is a digital Leica.

There's a lot of talk about making Ms less attractive to thieves.

How many people have had their Ms stolen from their necks, because of red dots or "M6/7/8" in white lettering on the front? Just wondering.

I never lost any photo gear to thieves. (Knock on wood!)

I believe, if one looks as an easy target the thieves will use this to their advantage. The mugger don't want resistance, they want an easy catch.

Looking street smart and confident, not overly protecting your gear, but still make shure it's not an easy target, then you will most likly be left alone.

I feel better and more anonymous on the street with tape over the logo dot and "M8."

Even though we are told New York is one of the safest citis in the World, I would rather not push my luck.

Have lost a Nikon F and an M3 to thieves over the years so I believe in incognito when possible. But primarily interested for esthetic reasons, wouldn't mind changing the "M-8" to a nice dark gray as well.

Guess I'll try to get a spare dot to play with.Checked DAG, out of stock.

Isn't the Red Dot removable?

Butch

Yes, see Carsten's thread in the link I provided below, which explains how to swap a red dot for a black one.

The easiest way to remove the dot is to press down firmly with a pointed object, directly in the middle of the dot, perpendicularly. The dot is made of very thin metal. However, don't slip! And the dot will be useless afterwards. The method I described with wooden matches can take a very long time. It took me 15 minutes of non-stop twiddling. The dot remains intact though.

Yes, I was amazed one time I had my fingers over the M8 and red dot and was snapping away, yet as soon as I uncovered the logos, people suddenly gasped and pointed and yelled "My God that's a camera!".
