pierre-yves Posted February 26, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I have my old elmar 3,5cm f3.5 mounted to the m8, with frames for 50mm but the upper frame of the picture taken is significantly higher than what I see in the viewfinder when the subject is distant. I know that the viewfinder is calibrated for being accurate at close distances. But when I take a picture of a landscape, for instance, I have a large portion of "unwanted" horizon. I couldn't find any answer to this. Is it normal to such an extent ? I have not yet tried any other lens yet (waiting for a voigtlander 28mm to arrive...) thanks ! Advertisement Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Hi pierre-yves, Take a look here M8 frames too high with 50mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted February 26, 2015 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2015 Why aren't you using an adaptor which brings up the 35mm frames? Or use the preview lever? If you're framing with the 50mm frames of course the lens will capture a much larger area than the frame lines suggest.
jaapv Posted February 26, 2015 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2015 And the parallax correction will be incorrect.
lct Posted February 26, 2015 Share #4 Posted February 26, 2015 Or trade your M8 for an M8.2 which framelines are more accurate at long distance. Welcome, dear visitor! pierre-yves Posted February 26, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted February 26, 2015 Why aren't you using an adaptor which brings up the 35mm frames? Or use the preview lever? If you're framing with the 50mm frames of course the lens will capture a much larger area than the frame lines suggest. But the 35mm is a 50mm on an m8, no ? So I should use the 50mm frames to compose, or am I wrong ?
jaapv Posted February 26, 2015 Share #6 Posted February 26, 2015 No - you are wrong. The framelines are adapted to the crop factor. A 35 is a 35, no matter what camera it is mounted on.
pierre-yves Posted February 26, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted February 26, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry, I got it wrong. Since the beginning, I'm talking of the 35mm frames, which show the errors mentioned i.e. "too much sky". So is it normal ? Thank you !
jaapv Posted February 26, 2015 Share #8 Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) Look for a painting or something else rectangular that is exactly in the 2:3 ratio and fits the framelines at 1 meter, Take a photograph of it fitting exactly the framelines, using a tripod and lining it out parallel to the wall. Take a photograph and post it for us to see. Btw, does your camera do this with other 35 mm lenses as well? If not, it may be that the lens is off-axis. pierre-yves Posted February 26, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted February 26, 2015 Tough assignment, Jaap, especially in an old house where nothing is flat or leveled, not even the ground.. In the viewfinder, the 35mm frames almost match those of the inner aluminium boarders of the shelf. Hope this is clear enough, thank you for your help ! Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted February 26, 2015 Share #10 Posted February 26, 2015 Well, that appears to be fairly symmetrical. I would say your lens is not 35 mm, but more something like 32. Nothing to worry about, one of the little quirks of old lenses
