Don't worry, I got an M8 on December 30th, you are not alone, plenty of party latecomers.

The weather is crap here too, hope you get a chance to use yours.

Yes, weather is crappy, but it's still a good time to shot, even in extreme conditions. :)

my summars are both old and well used and have the glow typical for these particular lenses --- will be shooting mainly with my canon 25mm... will get it coded soon enough- -- am hunting down true ir (infrarot) filters for both summar (34mm) and the cannon 25mm (44mm) as well as the uv/ir cut filters. Have placed a call to leica to see if i'm lucky enough to get the two filters they were doing a long time ago

Most of the Canon lenses use 40mm, very hard to find. I use a 40->43 step-up ring, then use a 43mm IR cut filter. You might look for some of the Wratten Gelatin filters for Visible cut. A Wratten 88a is a good choice. There is also a series VI adapter for the Canon lenses.

I bought the M8 over 5 years ago, still enjoy using it. It is better than ever with the uncompresses RAW mode available. Look at Arvid's M8raw2dng software, some threads in this forum.

Welcome all!

I've just got mine this week. Really excited about it.

Although few first shots were more than dissapoining ;)

With summicron-c 40mm f2 with no ir filter...

After canon eos 7d and sony nex 6 this is quite a challenge :)

I'm thinking of buying Zeiss biogon 35mm f2 to replace cron or as well.

What do you think?

Cheers,

You know this already i guess but the best advice you can have is to abstain from using any lens on the M8 without IR-cut filter, for colour pics i mean. Easier way with the Summicron 40/2 is to use a B+W 486 UV/IR filter (don't screw it too tight into the lens barrel as it has not the same filter thread) and to screw the hood into the filter. I have no experience with Biogon 35/2 but both Summicron 40/2 and Biogon 35/2.8 work fine on the M8.

I also got mine (2nd time!) right before xmas. I don't know why I moved to m9, but it's good to be back. I would look at m-rok 40 and zeiss 28 2.5 as other alternative too. You should definitely get uv/ir if shooting color.

Does lens coding necessary? I hand coded mine, YMMV.

Hi and Welcome,

The IR/UV filters make a huge difference for all mages. The filters tune the light to fit the sensor spectral requirements for digital processing. They are entirely necessary, try some cheap Rokolax filters,

Don't get too carried away...try some B&W in the mean time...

cheers Dave S :)

I've managed to buy second hand leitz uv/ir (13410) and it's fine now, although the summicron 40 threads are 39mm diameter, but too coarse to receive standard filters.

I screw it gently just 90 degrees, it stays in place, but it's not solid...

I've heard that there is an adapter 39/39mm which perfectly screws into summicron and takes standard 39mm filter, have you seen it?

Note that it tends to bind, so a microblob of silicone grease on the threads is required. Also the assembly of lens and filter rather spoils the compactness of the Summicron-C. The best solution is to fit the glass of a 39 mm filter under the original lens hood, downside: it will rattle slightly.

As far as my samples are concerned, Rocolax UV/IR filters have no internal filter thread so it is impossible to screw a hood into them.
Nor have Leica filters. Edited by jaapv

Greetings xpr.108 I am sure that many here will benefit from your elaboration on your experience with the M9 and from highlighting the areas in which you found the M8 more preferable. Many thanks.

I am probably not the right person to do the comparison.

I simply don't like the way m9 renders b&w and color (as DNG, untouched). The other part which I am unsure of is that I might actually liked 1.3x crop rather than full frame.

So... I based my like and dislike on the two reasons above. Not very scientific, I know.

I guess you just have to try both and decide that yourself. It could be as simple as in my case or not.

[...] Nor have Leica filters.

All my UV/IR Leica filters have internal filter threads i believe but i may be wrong. That is the case for the samples i have with me at least (E39, E46). What diameters are yours if i may ask?

(Macro-Elmar 90/4, 13410 UV/IR filter, 12517 rubber hood)
