Determining Shutter Actuations on an M8

Recommended Posts

If you use firefox as browser, this plugin will do the job nicely:

https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/3905

Then look for the unique ID which is at the end of the file and looks like this:

Image Unique ID = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It's a hex code, which you can convert to decimal here:

Dirk looks pretty good here is mine

Exif Sub IFD

* Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/125 second = 0.00800 second

* Exposure Program = manual control (1)

* ISO Speed Ratings = 160

* Exif Version = 0220

* Original Date/Time = 2007:10:02 22:04:21

* Digitization Date/Time = 2007:10:02 22:04:21

* Shutter Speed Value (APEX) = 6965784/1000000

Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) = 1/125.00 second

* Exposure Bias (EV) = 0/65536 = 0.00

* Max Aperture Value (APEX) = 0/65536 = 0.00

Max Aperture = F1.00

* Metering Mode = center weighted average (2)

* Light Source / White Balance = unknown (0)

* Flash = n/a (8)

* Colour Space = 65535

* Image Width = 2475 pixels

* Image Height = 3680 pixels

* Focal Plane X-Resolution = 3729/1 = 3729.00

* Focal Plane Y-Resolution = 3764/1 = 3764.00

* Focal Plane X/Y-Resolution Unit = inch (2)

* Image Source = digital still camera (DSC)

* Scene Type = directly photographed image

* White Balance = manual (1)

* Digital Zoom Ratio = 0/1 = 0.00

* Scene Capture Type = standard (0)

* Image Unique ID = 00000000000000000000000000002502

Than ran it in the other program and got 9474 which sounds about right

Dirk, thanks. I downloaded it via Firefox, but I am not sure where it is plugged in, how to open it, and use it? Maybe it is explained in German, which I am afraid I don't know.

Thanks.

No need to download anything. All you need is a scientific calculator, whether on your PC or hand held. Input the HEX and covert to Decimal. You can do that with Windows built in Calc program and I'm sure Apple/Mac must have one also.

My Image Unique ID shows 0000000000000000000000000000147E as my last frame. How does the letter calculate? I would guess I have somewhere around 5,000 actuations.

So between 2 camera's i have shot 19k in frames in less than a year. Now if i could magically multiply that by 10 dollars per frame that would make me happy:D

Guy,

From what I remember, a frame of velvia used to cost me about $0.50 (film+development). So, your 19K frames in velvia would've cost you $9500.00.

It looks like you just paid both of your cameras if you think you were shooting film the whole time.

Every frame you shoot from now on is free :)

You know we completely forget about that stuff with the cost of film. Amazing stat. Of course there is time behind the keyboard but still at least you can add that one up. That is pretty cool to see that number on the costs. thanks

Pretty nerdy stuff on Leica's part to record the number of shutter actuations in hexadecimal. I guess it does save a lot of ROM space and it's a very natural counting system if have a silicon body and 8 legs!

BTW: Nerdy Joke: There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't!

Post a M8 directly generated jpeg (without PS) in the thread then I'll tell you the number.

I know, it's a very mundane image, but wondered if you could check the data and let me know how many shutter actuations my M8 has on it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
