silentwings Posted July 12, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 12, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, recently the frame line selector on my M8 seems lost its tightness and can't spring it back to the default position. Also when lens loaded onto the body, the frame line selector cannot jump to the right frame line and I need to manually push the selector to its right position. Is it a problem that I can fix easily by myself? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Hi silentwings, Take a look here Problems of Leica M8 frameline selector. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted July 12, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 12, 2014 Unusual occurrence. Doesn't sound user fixable to me. Sounds as if a spring may have broken or slipped in the frame preview selector assembly. And to get to that section requires pretty much a full teardown of the camera. See Mark Norton's http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/21331-anatomy-leica-m8.html for details. Do I understand correctly that the problem occurs both with and without lens mounted? A 28mm or 90mm should push the selector lever all the way over toward the lens just by mechanical contact with the lens selector assembly; by default (as I'm sure you know), the lever should spring to the 35mm position when no lens is mounted. You didn't accidentally try to mount a lens without lining up the red dot with the lens-release button, did you? That might could damage the lens preview lever linkage as well.
silentwings Posted July 16, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted July 16, 2014 Yes. After unloading the lens, now it seems can slowly return to the default position. But when the lens loaded, I need to use fingers to manually adjust the lever to the right frame. It didn't perform like this before. I always mounted the lens correctly without any issue, and it seems that the spring inside was not as good as before. I didn't plan to send it out to fix, as long as I still can manipulate by myself. It's just not flexible and bump back easily like before. Unusual occurrence. Doesn't sound user fixable to me. Sounds as if a spring may have broken or slipped in the frame preview selector assembly. ho_co Posted July 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2014 Sounds as if the assembly is somehow gummed up. I have no idea how that could happen; it's certainly not a common occurrence. Glad you can still work it by hand. I hope someone else may have more insight; I'm at a loss. Sorry.
jip Posted July 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 17, 2014 I had this problem with my M9-P and send it in to Leica they repaired it for free... Oh and the problem was a certain spring that wasn't strong enough to pull the mechanical thing because it wasn't lubricated enough anymore or something... I also asked if they could look at my shutter release and they did because it was a little rough.
silentwings Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted July 22, 2014 Thank you very much! I think I may send it to Leica NJ for repair in the future. After all, it's not a big issue as I still can manually move it to the correct frame line position. I had this problem with my M9-P and send it in to Leica they repaired it for free...
