jacksteele48 Posted February 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, I just picked up a used M8! Great camera, loving it so far! Anyways, it came with the handgrip, but without the normal baseplate. I really like the way it looks and feels without the handgrip a lot more, so I'd like to get the original baseplate for it... How much would that cost and where should I get it? Thanks!

jaapv Posted February 15, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 15, 2014 You might consider getting Luigi Creszenzi’s M-Mate bottom plate. Leicatime Luigi Crescenzi : leica cameras leica compur mp elmar 250 reporter leicavit
norbertnl Posted February 15, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 15, 2014 to get the original baseplate I remember a new baseplate for my chrome M8 was about 180€ directly from Leica in Solms. There should be somebody at Leica who can tell you how these are distributed to / in the USA.
M9reno Posted February 15, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 15, 2014 Do the MM, M, M8 and M9 use the same bottom plate?
jaapv Posted February 15, 2014 Share #6 Posted February 15, 2014 Yes, but the M9/MM is slightly tighter. Specify when ordering. @ Norbert:The OP might be unaware of Luigi’s plate.
marcg Posted February 15, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can thoroughly recommend the Luigi bottom plate. It has separate access hatches for the SD card and the battery. It is so nice not having to remove the entire bottom of the camera all the time. The only disadvantage is that it is about 1mm deeper and this means that although the camera still fits leather cases, the top part of the screen hole in the case will overlap the screen by 1mm. It isn't a problem but isn't as neat as with a normal baseplate. If you get a Luigi case, he makes one specially 1mm deeper to accommodate his baseplate. As you aren't faced with the dilemma of having to stop using a perfectly good original baseplate, if I were you I'd go for the Luigi. The problem of having to remove the entire baseplate all the time is something which has been complained about for years since Leica went digital - M8, M9, MM and now M240. At he very least, a hatched baseplate won't hurt the value of the camera - and it may even enhance it. They are very well made.
Photoskeptic Posted February 15, 2014 Share #8 Posted February 15, 2014 Try DAG or Sherry. Sherry used to list them on her site. Unfortunately it's been so long I can't even remember her site name. Sorry. I know you stated you wanted an original and I agree with your reasoning, however the RRS bottom plate is a nice piece of kit and has the advantage of a built-in Arca-Swiss mounting flange.
lct Posted February 15, 2014 Share #9 Posted February 15, 2014 Seems like there's a NIB black baseplate at DAG Camera Parts.
jacksteele48 Posted February 15, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted February 15, 2014 @ Norbert:The OP might be unaware of Luigi’s plate. I've looked at it a few times. I would prefer an original I think, but I don't care very much. Thanks for all the suggestions guys! This forum has made it a lot easier for a new Leica user! jacksteele48 Posted February 15, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted February 15, 2014 Seems like there's a NIB black baseplate at DAG Camera Parts. That looks perfect, but it costs so much! I'm only fourteen, and I've been saving for this camera for a really long time, and now I'm kinda out of money... I had hoped it would be <$100 Anyway, thanks so much for all of the responses! I think I'll probably get the RRS one because I'm planning to get one of their ballheads at some point.

The fit is amazing and it is extremely rugged. Ballheads with the Arca -Swiss type quick release are widely available as well. BTW the M8 and M9 use the same plate, here.
dlbr Posted March 18, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 18, 2014 I had the same problem earlier this year. I was lucky to find the normal plate on ebay, cost me as little as 50EUR and I sold the grip slightly higher . Prices vary greatly, though. Search for Leica M8 baseplate through all ebay sites, they appear from time to time. IMHO M9 plates are identical, as far as I could test. RotarySMP Posted April 7, 2014 Share #19 Posted April 7, 2014 Hi Jack Steele, Did you ever find the baseplate you were looking for? Is you Leica Silver or black? I did the same as you, bought a used black M8 which came with the handgrip. I thought it looked corny, so I picked up a silver baseplate of Ebay for €60. It's opening d ring falls open sometimes. Having both I found I prefer the Handgrip after all. If you are interested I would be willing to sell you the silver baseplate for what I paid for it. Regards, Mark

Thanks for the offer though! I've been saving for a baseplate and a strap. The camera is awesome no matter if it has a grip or not.
