Henry Fool Posted February 7, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I've noticed an area of yellowish discolouration in the centre of my M8.2's LCD screen, it's not very bad and only really noticeable on very light images. I'm worried it'll get worse if I leave it unchecked though. It's actually a relatively new camera and still has a few months left on the Passport Warranty. Can anyone tell from this image if it's the infamous 'coffee stain'? Edited February 7, 2014 by Henry Fool

wattsy Posted February 7, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2014 Looks like it. That camera looks familiar.
Henry Fool Posted February 7, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted February 7, 2014 Hello there It's a great camera, bit worried that it'll darken or get worse over time, I might send it in to get checked out. Just wanted to check opinions from anyone else who has had the same issue whether theirs appeared in a similar manner?
earleygallery Posted February 7, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2014 From what I've read on here the Coffee Stain issue doesn't affect the operation of the LCD and it's not connected with the LCD failures. There's nothing Leica can do about it, as they can't replace the LCD. They'll make you an offer for an ME instead if that's of interest to you, otherwise just live with it. Some people have reported that it has disappeared of it's own accord.
photolotse Posted February 7, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2014 Had a coffee stained M8.2 which had been exchanged for a M9-P for free within warranty. Picture you have taken looks similar to mine. However, had to sent in the camera for inspection to confirm the issue by Leica. Overall, I have experienced a smooth process. Henry Fool Posted February 7, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted February 7, 2014 Thanks Carsten that's very helpful to see, it looks a lot more pronounced but I guess there's a fair chance it'll get worse over time.
wda Posted February 7, 2014 Share #10 Posted February 7, 2014 Henry your discolouration is much less well defined than mine, which happened on two M8 cameras. Both were repaired under warranty. Mine had a distinct rectangular frame, somewhat smaller than full-screen.
doolittle Posted February 7, 2014 Share #11 Posted February 7, 2014 Have a look at this thread, there is a post on Leica exchange trade-in values: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/260637-just-bought-m8-2-coffe-stain-2.html If you still have warranty left, you are looking at a great deal on an M240, ME (or possibly M9P), so I would contact Leica as soon as possible and send the camera to them. In other cases, where the trade in deal wasn't so favourable, I would be inclined to hang on to the camera (I have a coffee-stained M8 for ages). In my experience it doesn't seem to get any worse. It doesn't stop me seeing the histogram and menu, which is all the screen is really good for anyway!

Actually, it has been rather challenging for me to capture the coffee stain. Sometimes I even was not sure to see it at all. I've bought an ex Demo M8.2 with the Leica warranty. After about 12 month of usage the coffee stain appeared. I highly recommend to send in the M8.2 to Leica. I've been very satisfied with their service! With the stain I would expect a hit on resale value. Either way - if you are happy with the M8 (and it is a superb camera at that!) then live with the "beauty mark". lct Posted February 11, 2014 Share #15 Posted February 11, 2014 ...if you are happy with the M8 (and it is a superb camera at that!) then live with the "beauty mark"... That's what i'm doing to complement the M240 and use some of my favorite lenses in crop mode. The coffee stain of my M8.2 is barely visible though and i don't chimp much anyway.
