tookaphotoof Posted January 17, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) 9 Visible dust swabs and some Smear Away further and still about 18 spots on the sensor of my M8.2. I've read some stories about people having a hard time trying to clean their sensor, but it can't be this hard, can it? One wipe on the sensor of my 5D2 and I'm usually good to go. Anyone have ideas how to deal with the spots? L1031401-Edit.jpg by Tookaphotoof, on Flickr
Advertisement Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Hi tookaphotoof, Take a look here spots on sensor M8.2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted January 17, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 17, 2014 Why haven't you tried to clean it as you do with your Canon? Dust is a fact of life, even sensors with dust removal systems sometimes need a blast with a rocket blower or wet clean.
tookaphotoof Posted January 17, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted January 17, 2014 Well, that's the whole point. I've wet cleaned it as I clean my Canon when needed. I just ordered a box of swipes from Visible Dust (green version) for the 1.3 sensor. Already had the fluid. Not sure if someone has good experiences with other brands? earleygallery Posted January 17, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 17, 2014 Sorry I didn't read your post correctly. Odd that usual cleaning hasn't removed them I agree!
Maarten Posted January 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 17, 2014 For the cleaning fluid: have you tried isopropanol (isopropylalcohol)? This is the best solvent to clean your sensor. Isopropanol is available from drugstores and pharmacies and 10 times cheaper than the fancy labeled stuff. It also cleans your lenses, viewfinder etc very easy. Good luck, Maarten
Loren Posted January 17, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 17, 2014 Are you sure it is not the lens? Do you have a loupe?
earleygallery Posted January 17, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 17, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are you sure it is not the lens? Do you have a loupe? It can't be the lens. Dust on a lens would not show up like that. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/barnacks-bar/315347-spotted-speck-dust-your-lens.html
archi4 Posted January 17, 2014 Share #8 Posted January 17, 2014 Dust on the rear element of a lens is indeed larger and less clearly defined. I had some spots which smear away did not remove and I then used Eclipse with success.
tookaphotoof Posted January 17, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted January 17, 2014 Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can get some isopropanol tomorrow morning. Tried to clean it two times extra tonight, so only one swab left now. 8 Remaining spots. I'm on my way to a touchdown. Loren, I don't have a loop. I usually clean the sensor, take a picture at a very small aperture towards the sky and check the photo on the computer.
jaapv Posted January 18, 2014 Share #10 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) Smear Away is specifically for grease and oil spots. If you cannot remove the spots, they are probably water-soluble. In the Visible Dust lineup VDust Plus is the alternative to try. The Green Clean wet-and-dry swabs are quite effective for water-soluble dust as well. If you really get stuck you are welcome to come by my practice. We could have a quick look at the sensor through the microscope. tookaphotoof Posted January 24, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted January 24, 2014 Well, decided to give vdust plus a try. Ran out of swabs now, so that's 16 in total. Have 6 spots left. Might be wise to let you have a look over it before I order some new swabs, Jaap? The only upside at the moment is I haven't got a chance to seriously be out for the day taking photos. tookaphotoof Posted January 26, 2014 Author Share #14 Posted January 26, 2014 No worries Jaap, not in a hurry at all. Enjoy Italy.
tookaphotoof Posted February 4, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted February 4, 2014 Well, a little update. Couldn't couldn't resist to try Eclipse, so ordered that and a new set of swabs. Gave it three goes and no luck. The spots never seem to be on the same place. Absolutely puzzled why it was that difficult I noticed that the screen had a large square spot that looked light brown. Enlarging the photo didn't change the size or the size of that. Decided to fill in the the forms and the camera will be send in to Solms for a thorough check. tookaphotoof Posted March 18, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted March 18, 2014 Another update. Today I got mail from Leica. LCD had the 'coffee stain' problem. Got the option to let them check and clean the sensor or to trade it in for another digital M. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
tenezus Posted March 19, 2014 Share #17 Posted March 19, 2014 What are The options? How much do you have to pay to replace your M8? Thanks

tookaphotoof Posted March 20, 2014 Author Share #19 Posted March 20, 2014 Tenezus, I have asked for them to give me a quote for the M240 and ME as well. Jaap, I'd be tempted to go for the M240 as it's their latest, but I've just ordered some parts for a project so it really depends on their offer. Even if I can only stretch for an ME it will make me a happy man as I always needed a bit of time to adapt myself for the crop factor. I mostly shoot film at the moment.
