There is of course a work around for this, there is a script written by others that when modified can call Exiftool and modify the camera model for all selected files. This in essence will allow you to hang on to your existing adjustments by using the old profile for these files.

I would suggest for the short term if you are importing DNG's into Aperture which has been updated that you put the images into a new project.

I'm going to have to make contact with Ian Bogost our script specialist over the next day or so and get a nice easy script going for others to patch existing files.

Thanks a bunch Apple, you've just made me redundant!
Yeah, and me too . Just a few days after I did the last revision too!

At least we have a new project to un-hack the hack

Not quite sure what you mean ... if you just click an M8 DNG file it will probably launch Photoshop or whatever your main image editor is, but if you right-click (or control-click if you're not using a 2-button mouse) you can select Preview under "Open with ..." in the contextual menu.

The easiest way is to just drag a DNG file and drop it on the Preview icon. Handy for quickly reviewing files, although only one a time.

Not sure if that answers the question. If not, try me again.

Kent.

Hi Eoin
I pretty much agree with your findings - I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I saw that the old converted dng files were still 'okay' - I half expected them to be unreadable.
However, I had a saved Camera Default Profile for the old versions, and i think this needs to be changed for the new imports.

What I did was to:
1. remove all adjustments
2. apply Apple profile
3. save as camera default profile

I need to experiment more, but it seems to do a good job, but I found that I was getting moire with the old camera default profile and the 'full size' DNG files.
Now I'm not
As for unhacking the hack - do you think it's necessary?

I think what he means is if you open up a folder that contains M8 dng files, select view as icons (command + 1 in finder) will a preview load as the icon's image.

It is working for me. Leica M8 dng's do show the correct preivew.

To be honest Jono, I don't think it's necessary, they are so damn close anyway and I'm not going to bother. Let's be honest here, well me anyway, every time I go to reprint an image I'll generally make some other adjustment to it to try to better it than the last print out.

I've tested the unhack on a duplicate of my Library and processing 4000 files took a fair while 2-3 hours but everything worked as it should afterwards, I can't promise that will be the case for every single users library out there. So I guess I'm saying if you really really really feel the need I'll give the script to Ian and he can work his magic (Ian I'll email it to you tomorrow).

Ah yes, you're probably right.
Yes, that's working fine for me too. And if you increase the icon size a bit it makes quite a nice little multi-file preview.

Thanks for the clarification,

Kent.

Andy,
Try before you cry! My DMR file show thumbnails with the new OSX update. Probably means DMR will be supported in Aperture, too.

In finder menu click view, show view options, then in the popup click show icon preview then all the files will show previews and you can then set the icon size, sweet.

I've come to the same conclusion as you - I have one project which is 'work in progress' but I'll simply re-import the original dng files for that - for the rest of them, I'll make changes 'as and when'.

Such a relief that it actually reads the old conversions anyway.

the new ones look pretty good to me, but it'll take a while to get used to.

Thanks for all your help over this - glad to have 'stuck in there'

Good point - it was too late to play around last night. Excellent news if Aperture now supports DMR users too...

Sadly as usual, it seems there is no free lunch. the update runs fine on my Core-duo2 iMac and I will in all probability switch from C1+iPhoto+PSE4 to Aperture. However since the update, my 1.4 Ghz G4 iBook is running like it is immersed in Treacle. I am just running all the utilities, defrags and scripts to see if it will speed up but not looking good at the moment. It is quite significant. Running the usual test tasks such as a Noise Ninja filter in PSE4 are about 150 - 200% slower. Maybe it is Apple's way of forcing me to buy a Macbook but I don't like the shiny screen and the Macbook Pro's are too big.

For others suffering the same problem - I think I have cracked it. You have to clear the system, kernel and application caches and restart to allow the OS to rebuild the caches with the 10.4.10 update. I think I am more or less back to speed now. I used the shareware ONYX to clear the caches.

Wilson- Did you run a "repair privileges" in disk utility? This can be a source of slowing down the system when upgrading the OS. best....Peter

In fact, DMR images don't even show in the Finder preview, or iPhoto, or Preview.

The only way they show is if you have used Lightroom to import them from your card and let Adobe handle what Apple can't be bothered to.

I am not a happy camper.

How did you import your images, Joe?
