My new M8 is delivering several corrupted image files per data card. I have used several different SD cards - Sandisk Ultra II 2GB of different vintage - with the same result. Problems are:
1) an occasional strip across JPG files (see sample). 2) an occasional DNG file that shows up as 0KB and does not exist except for the file name. 3) an occasional corrupted DNG file that is only 2.5 mb rather than the regular 10 mb on disk, and shows up as a quarter sized preview in Capture ONE, and can neither be opened nor edited. I have attached a file list. 81 is corrupted and 90 is a phantom file. I am within the exchange period wth the dealer but wanted to check with the forum and find out whether this is a known problem and within the tolerance of indulgent Leica users. |

It is more likely the SD card rather than the camera. Did you try another card?Maybe even the reader, although I never heard of that.

I suggest making an enquiry with your dealer about swapping the camera for another. The M8 seems more freely available now so there should be less incentive to try and work around problems with a new camera.

I bought a Lexar133x 1GB SD card and was unable to replicate the problem. The problem occured 3 of my 4 of the Sandisk Ultra II 2 GB cards - all of which I shall now relegate to the scrap heap.

I have Transcend 2GB's and Extreme III 1 and 2GB SD cards. Only the Extreme III 1GB is Leica-tested and approved. I use a PC, and have had no problems in 3000 exposures. The Ultra II is a slightly older model and the Extreme III seems to be SanDisk's fast offering today. Many posters have had the same experience of no problems with Extreme IIIs and they do seem to be the fastest available right now for downloading to the computer. Similarly, the Transcends have been the best price. I guess this is a bit unpredictable, and it will pay to deal with sources of supply who will take back cards that act funny.

Hi Nat,
I'm not sure if you bought your SD cards via mail order. There have been a couple of problems posted on the forum with San Disk cards. They seem to have been targeted by counterfeit goods. This seems to be mainly via mail order. The counterfeit cards are not the same quality and have known to show up problems. As for identifing these from the genuine cards? I don't know - from what has been posted here, the copies are so good that they are indistinguishable from the genuine ones. Andreas |
