I have combed through the achieves but found no definitive answer, especially since te original question was asked when the M8 was new..

Is there any way for Leica Image Capture to work on the current Mac OS operating system? I'm thinking no but I wanted a definitive answer.

Thanks

I had all the bits, so I had to test my own theory. It actually works. I'm not sure I really believed it would.

Very cool Carl. In the end you had to intstall all of XP correct, how much space did that take? The VMware seems to allows you to open that one window without completely switching back and forth between OS.

Great Job, if we had gold stars on here you would get one.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks John,

XP takes about 3GB. VMWare Fusion has a view called "unified" where the Windws aps are seamless with the OSX apps. Really very cool. Much more so than running VMWare workstation on a Windows box which is what I have been doing for the past dozen or so years.

Know you're asking about Leica's software, but just to let you know, you can use Aperture to shoot the M8 tethered. This is version 3 in action, I use Aperture 2 with good results--expect Aperture 3 isn't much different.

Awesome, I just happen to have Aperture 2 so I'm going to give that a try. I know tethered shooting is not very Leica-esque but I'm planning on using it for still life.

All very helpful, sorry Carl I think I'm going to go the Aperture route, saves having to find a copy of XP and so forth. Still glad you tested it out!

I have used Aperture 3 ( 3.11) to tether my M8u. Although not in the supported list it does work allowing capture and control of the shutter release from the MacBookPro I use.

If you just connect the camera and turn on the camera screen shows USB connected! The option to tether (file-tether) will be greyed out as johnloumiles reports. What you need to do is select a file location to save to in the library tag eg Untitled project. The grey then darkens to start session, click on the tether settings box and a pop up box shows the camera model exposures made etc and a capture button which fires the shutter.

The problem is when tethered the M8 will not allow settings to be changed eg menu button does nothing so the session needs to be stopped and camera disconnected setting changed then re-attached

Without an SD card in the camera the shutter fires but no capture is made.

The image import does not appear on screen until the camera light stops flashing so if you are set to DNG+Jpeg you are in for a long wait :D

From aperture HELP

To set up Aperture for tethered shooting

Connect your camera to your computer.

In the Library Inspector, select the project you want the images captured to.

Choose File > Tether > Start Session.

Specify import settings.

For more information about the import settings, see Importing from Your Digital Camera or Card Reader.

Click Start Session.

The Tether HUD appears.

Do one of the following:

To begin the capture session: Click Capture.

To stop capturing images: Click Stop Session.

No shame. I used fixed lighting and camera position with an artist's journal capture project--tethering was the right answer. Saved me tons of time and ensured my setup didn't change over several shooting sessions.

Project results here: Sketch Books - Home - Victor Letonoff

The Elmar 50mm f/2.8 at f/8 was perfect for this work.

Other posters: thanks for the XP test and also the troubleshooting advice for Aperture.

Cheers and good luck!

There is another work around if you need too, using Image Capture. It does however require an Automator Folder Action to preview the pictures.

Open Automator and choose new folder action.

In the Library select Photos and then Open Images in Preview. Drag this to the pane on the right. In the drop down box above where it says Choose Folder pick where you want to save the images to and then save this action calling it what ever you want. (you only need to do this once)

Connect you camera using the USB cable.

Open Image Capture and go to File, Take Picture. This opens another dialog box which allows you to take either a single picture or a timed sequences of pictures. Set this to save the pictures to the folder you set the action for above.

Now when you press the shutter release the image will be captured saved to the folder and then opened in preview.

Not the best option as it's a little slow, but if you don't have Aperture or just want to experiment it does work.

Thanks I didn't tried the Aperture Thetering sollution!

With a Visoflex or any other studio sollution there is a great tool!

And I'll try it with the long focus lenses as I think that's better that any shutter cord.
