Default Shutter upgrade in New Jersey

Just a heads up to anyone thinking about getting the shutter upgrade in New Jersey that they are now taking orders (so to speak) for December.

I heard they hired some fresh hands just to do the upgrades. Hopefully by the time anyone who calls now has their M8 come up in line, those guys will have enough experience under their belts to get it right the first time, without screwing something else up in the process.

I do have my fingers crossed. While, knocking on my wooden desk, I haven't had to send my M8 for anything else, there is a nagging worry in my head based on some of the service horror stories I've heard.

Interesting - guess it depends on who answers the phone in NJ. They told me yesterday that it would "most likely be in November" - no firm date, don't call us we'll call you type response.

Spoke with Colleen. And yes, it was don't call us we'll call you.

I called the week before last, spoke with Colleen, when still trying to sort out whether I should just buy an 8.2 (financing it with my M8 + some gear that I was going to sell anyway, coming out pretty much even) and was told end of November.

Frage Re: Shutter upgrade in New Jersey

Weird. I called the end of last week and they said October. I wanted to be sure and get it in before my warranty expires in early December as my camera has that shutter recocking problem. And it didn't want to send it in twice, once for the shutter recocking and then again for the shutter and frame line up grade.

I also asked when the M8.2 would be available in the US and they wouldn't commit to any specific time frame but said before Christmas implying not anytime soon. But Photo Village said today that they expect the M8.2 within the next two weeks. So to believe??

Well is seems really odd that the M8.2 is readily available across the pond but the USA wouldn't have them for weeks and weeks.

They have started. I was first in line and I was called to send mine in. I did. I wonder how long it will take. When i sent it for repair, it took about 3 months. I shall keep you informed. They have now added another "improvement". It has to do with the squares on the view finder. I did not order it. It brings the total cost in USD to $1700.

Well, your advantage over most of the rest of us is that you're close enough to drive over and grab somebody by the neck if there are undue hassles.

I was told by Dave Elwell that anytime the camera has the top plate removed, which has to happen to get the body apart, they have to readjust the RF.
And with my recent experience with Leica NJ service it would be well advised to do anything other then sending it to NJ for anything.

If you want to show the guys in Jersey how it's done, this was the progress on my repair / upgrade at Solms (via repair tracking):

30.09.2008 Service order registered on
02.10.2008 Quotation sent on
08.10.2008 In repair
10.10.2008 Repair completed
11.10.2008 Shipment in process.

This covered replacement of the sensor + a full upgrade + all the checking...

Might be useful...

My M8 was completely dead and had lots replaced so the top plate must have been removed. It has worked just fine since. Hope I am as lucky this time because it is in NJ. They are slooow.

Hi - I'd contact them first to check when they can schedule yours in, then either send via a dealer or courier it yourself (there's an insurance issue then I suppose + if you're sending from the States, customs could be a hassle). The website was helpful and gives addresses and phone numbers.

Hope this helps...

Was told initially that they "can't get to it" until late November, but another person had mentioned "2 weeks"... I'm expecting the former. Too bad there's no way to track the repair there in NJ.

The two weeks they were probably referring to is what they were quoted as the turn-around time for the upgrade--that's how long I was told it would take--not how long before the camera could be looked at.

At least it'll be a nice Christmas present... given that the rest of the repair also goes well.

I asked PV about three weeks ago and they said "two weeks" on the M8.2 being available. I asked last week and they were still saying "two weeks". I informed them that the M8v2 is available and on the shelf in Europe and UK. that was news to them. I don't think they know. I'm on "the list" and paid a deposit. We'll see.
