Advertisement Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Hi leicaphilia, Take a look here Interesting 1973 24 page brochure re: Leica System. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Keith (M) Posted December 2, 2014 Share #2 Posted December 2, 2014 Despite all the M5's apparent virtues extensively extolled in the brochure, it has one over-riding drawback. Aesthetically it is, to coin a phrase "a dog's dinner". IMHO, of course!
105012 Posted December 2, 2014 Share #3 Posted December 2, 2014 Hi Keith, I am the proud owner of both an M5 and an M3. Carrying the M5 around I often get the comment "What a beautiful camera!" said with real feeling during conversations with people. It makes me wonder if the view you express is largely confined to a subset of us Leica enthusiasts (but not me! ).
zlatkob Posted December 2, 2014 Share #4 Posted December 2, 2014 It's a beautiful camera, elegant and purposeful. A little less curved than other M cameras, but still beautiful.
sc_rufctr Posted December 3, 2014 Share #5 Posted December 3, 2014 A great camera and it was certainly successful considering the total numbers sold. Production: Chrome 10,700 and Black 23,150 including special Leica 50th Anniversary (1,550 or 1,750 depending upon source) Sure it's not as handsome as the Ms but it has it's own unique style not to mention the metering system which has to be one of the best I've tried. The only thing that puts me off is the not available mercury cell issue. I know you can get adapters to over come this but they don't inspire confidence IMO. (Production figures from Cameraquest.) semi-ambivalent Posted December 3, 2014 Share #6 Posted December 3, 2014 Aesthetically it is, to coin a phrase "a dog's dinner". Don't sugar-coat it. s-a
xalo Posted December 3, 2014 Share #7 Posted December 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) A Fascinating Look At the Leica M System, 1973 | Leicaphilia You could make me want to buy a second M5... chrome three lug perhaps... Well, I would agree that even my battered M3 is more graceful to behold, but the efficient design, function and size of the M5 just fit and convey its effectiveness. On a French forum it was called the "Atlantic Wall"... My own background from east of the Rhine let's me see some soviet constructivism... The less time I spend looking at the camera, the more I peek through its (great!) finder Cheers, Alexander
sblitz Posted December 3, 2014 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2014 All those young people in the photos were my age, are now ..... nothing to do with the camera, but everything to do with a time and place and realizing 1973 was indeed a very very long time ago
leicaphilia Posted December 3, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted December 3, 2014 All those young people in the photos were my age, are now ..... nothing to do with the camera, but everything to do with a time and place and realizing 1973 was indeed a very very long time ago I was thinking the same thing, looking at the beautiful young women in the ads, about the same age I was (am). Seems like yesterday, although most are grandparents by now I presume. Fortunately, i have every negative I ever shot, going back to 1971, so I can look and see the beauty of the various young women I took for granted, even now. Will photographers starting today, in the digital age, be able to say the same in 2055?
sblitz Posted December 3, 2014 Share #10 Posted December 3, 2014 NO! Especially if you die and don't tell anyone what the code is for your computer. And how many people are going to sit around and sift through computer files, people who might not even know how to open the files, to what's there -- plus the old external drives. Nope I think when we go we might as well get buried with the laptop.

But the kids in this brochure are still younger...

Stealth3kpl Posted December 4, 2014 Share #17 Posted December 4, 2014 The M2/3/4/6/7/P are the sexy vixen across the street hoovering in nothing but high-heels. The M5 is the girl next door; all the buttons and dials are in the right place, but you wouldn't look at the mantlepiece, as we Brits say. kivis Posted December 5, 2014 Share #20 Posted December 5, 2014 I enjoyed reading this. Brings me back to the days when on Sunday we would run down to 47th St Photo for a GAS fix with Shutterbug classifieds in hand for comparison.
