Paulus Posted September 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today the news. There is a new MP/M6 camera, or should I say a new M3 camera. Who is interested? Leica M-A // Leica M // Fotografie - Leica Camera AG
Advertisement Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Hi Paulus, Take a look here Are we going to buy the new analogue M?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted September 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 16, 2014 Actually, apart from the frame counter, it's much closer to an M2 I can't see it selling in huge numbers, but it's an interesting addition to the line up and perfect to celebrate the 60th Anniversary.
Nicolas Soldati Posted September 16, 2014 Share #3 Posted September 16, 2014 No need to buy a new camera. I will just have to remove the battery from my MP instead ;-)
wattsy Posted September 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) I'd buy it if: 1) it came in black paint 2) I didn't already have a perfectly good Leica film body. As an aside, is it just me or does Leica appear to be losing a bit of focus? There are now a lot of different product lines with various special editions (the M-A has a whiff of a special edition about it, no matter what Leica say about it) and rehashed older models (M-P, M-E, S-E, X-E plus the new X using what looks like the X vario body, etc.). There was a time once when you had a choice of the current M or R body and that was it. I think I preferred it like that. Welcome, dear visitor! sblitz Posted September 16, 2014 Share #5 Posted September 16, 2014 perhaps it boosts the price of the M4
stephen.w Posted September 16, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 16, 2014 I see it is actually retailing for less than a new MP / M7 (at least at LeicaShop: Kameras - M System - LEICA). Not for me either, although I actually prefer the back chrome finish, but still nice to see a new film camera being released.
leicaphilia Posted September 16, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I applaud Leica for a new film camera offering. FILM IS NOT DEAD! I probably won't buy one, as I have enough mechanical Leicas, including a pristine Black M4 with a usable rewind crank instead of that knurled knob abomination on the new M-A (I don't get the return to the knurled knob on the MP and now the M-A; can someone enlighten me as to why Leica would do this in preference to the winder found on the M4 et seq.?)
jmr237 Posted September 16, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 16, 2014 I'm considering it. It appeals to the non-rational side of the brain: no meter, no distractions, the most streamlined essence of a camera that is already extraordinarily simple. Of course, you could always just get an M3 or M2 ... but it's exciting to have the option of a new film camera in 2014.
Paulus Posted September 16, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted September 16, 2014 I applaud Leica for a new film camera offering. FILM IS NOT DEAD! Who could imagin this 2 years ago??
pico Posted September 16, 2014 Share #10 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) I'd buy it if:1) it came in black paint 2) I didn't already have a perfectly good Leica film body. Agreed. Black enamel would be good. For what it will cost, we can still get a black enamel M4 with a CLA. I wonder if they will use the old nickel-plated brass strap lugs that wore into oval shape and sometimes right through. Ah, the good old days. The ad, if I read it properly, suggests that the MA ships with a rolll of Tri-X. Right? . Edited September 16, 2014 by pico
plasticman Posted September 16, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 16, 2014 I'd buy it if:1) it came in black paint You can buy my BP millenium and take the battery out... and I can buy the M-A. Everyone wins.
semi-ambivalent Posted September 16, 2014 Share #12 Posted September 16, 2014 Ah, the good old days. Leica appears to have remembered to chop into the 1/4 sec. engraving too. Those cats rarely miss a trick. s-a
NB23 Posted September 16, 2014 Share #13 Posted September 16, 2014 I went and ordered an a la carte 0.58 MP just last week. I'd be regretting this decision in te MA came in BP. But even then, the hyphen annoys me a lot. M-A? What are they thinking? So MP for me it is.
wattsy Posted September 16, 2014 Share #14 Posted September 16, 2014 You can buy my BP millenium and take the battery out... and I can buy the M-A. Everyone wins. In truth, the main (only) attraction of the M-A to me is that, without a meter, you get cleaner unbroken framelines. Taking the battery out of a metered M6 or MP isn't as nice IMO. This was what I liked about the MP Classic that I often wish I hadn't sold.
tookaphotoof Posted September 16, 2014 Share #15 Posted September 16, 2014 As of today, won't be upgrading the viewfinder of the M6. Will start saving for the M-A to use with my MP.
spydrxx Posted September 16, 2014 Share #16 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) I won't. My M2 was recently CLA'd and works just fine, as do my LTM bodies. But I am glad to see Leica having more film (I hate the use of the word analogue in this context) bodies. It should help soak up some of those post recession dollars. Paulus Posted September 16, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted September 16, 2014 Agreed. Right? . I think it's a little greedy to just give away one roll of Tri-x. Normally they come in packages of 10. At least that's the way I buy them. I hope Leica isn't suggesting, that the buyer: a. doesn't know his tri-x or b. Has the assumption the buyer only needs one roll...as for "strait into the cabinet vitrine " with that camera.
Paulus Posted September 16, 2014 Author Share #18 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) M-A? What are they thinking? They must be thinking: we cannot call it M 10 nor M 11 nor MP nor MP minus E, nor M 264 so I think they opt for the M-A. At least it will give Leica the oppertunity to go further with this. In 5 years an M-B, In 10 an M-C and so on.. Edited September 16, 2014 by Paulus
pico Posted September 16, 2014 Share #19 Posted September 16, 2014 [...] (I hate the use of the word analogue in this context) bodies. But if they named it the M Film, it would be M-F. "Hey, Dude, is that a mutha f...?"
mfunnell Posted September 16, 2014 Share #20 Posted September 16, 2014 If it were a better camera than my M3, I might consider it. But I doubt that it really is... ...Mike
