paint color on MP shutter speed dial

What color is the “B/off” marking on your black paint MP’s shutter speed dial? It seems like red is the most common color, but sometimes—including in the picture on Leica’s US website—it’s painted yellow. Did Leica change to yellow for more recently manufactured MPs?

My question is limited to black paint MPs. Some use red paint and some use yellow paint for the "B/off" marking. Wondering if there is any pattern in when leica uses the red or yellow color.

fwiw, I've never seen anything other than red on both chrome and black paint. I think that image you posted from the Leica website is a heavily photoshopped image that perhaps by mistake ended up with a yellowish looking color or it's a black chrome a la carte version (which I've seen as yellow on some a la carte ones.) But in the wild I've yet to see anything besides red on a black paint.

p.s., where are these "some use yellow paint" black paint specimens you're referring to (besides that one image on the website which is most likely a black chrome a la carte.)? Maybe you're confusing them with the M7 which has yellow paint for 'auto' and 'flash' settings (?)

It's red on mine, and I agree I haven't seen any other colour. It would look like a complete cock up anyway with the two key dimples in the rewind knob being infilled red and then the Off position coloured yellow, give Leica some credit for aesthetic taste and continuity.

Well, that digigraphy seems to imply muted reflections, like from black chrome. My so-colored MP had the yellow mark. I did not find it ugly, it's the same yellow which fills some of the black lenses' engravings. The red fillings in the rewind knob would go well with the red dome on the lens — or a red TA softrelease.

Steve, as for giving Leica "some credit for aesthetic taste and continuity"... I look at a range of more recent products and take your words for dry British humour :p

Cheers,

Alexander

Perhaps it's true that the yellow "B/off" marking is limited to black chrome models. Here's a link to an example.

If that's true (which seems likely), I wonder why Leica would show a black chrome MP as the main image on its MP web page. You would think they would show a black paint or a chrome MP, given that those two finishes are the default options.

Good point.

Check out post #1396 in the "I love my MP" thread. Looks like a black paint MP a la carte with yellow paint on the shutter dial.

fwiw, I see no yellow shutter dial markings in any of those images you've referenced, only red........

But if you're concerned, then email Leica before you make your a la carte order and ask them about it. I'm sure they will let you know before you order.

Looks red to me ... compare it to the color of the distance markings on the lens ... I think we may have to agree to disagree. ;)

Eh???

The image in the post you linked to shows red, as I said, not yellow!

Great thread! :D :D

My mistake! I meant to say yellow, not red. Perhaps that's a sign that it's time to move on to more important topics ... ;)

Traditionally for Leica:

Silver chrome finish = red paint in shutter dial

Black paint finish = red paint in shutter dial

Black chrome finish = yellow paint in shutter dial, however, through the á la carte program you can get the paint to be red, so it matches the two rewinds dots... very cute.

You can also buy an M Monochrom made in the the standard black chrome finish. The paint in the shutter dial is red paint, because... well, Leica doesn't always make sense...
