drk_1981 Posted June 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, I'm usually shooting b&w (mostly ilford hp5 or fujifilm acros&neopan) however as I have now the luxury to carry around two film cameras i want to shoot some color with my m6. due to a business trip i'm heading to amsterdam next week and would like to stack up some color film as well. however as I do not shoot color on film (as home development is a fuzz), I'd need some advice for selecting the good film. I know this is a difficult and highly subjective topic however I'd appreciate some advice. thanks a lot

hobbyfossi201 Posted June 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2014 Hi, It. FairPlay depends on the style of result you prefer. Take Kodak Porta 160 if you'd like to get pretty neutral & natural pictures, Kodak Ektar 100 for more vivid results or - as I usually do - Kodak Gold 200 or Fuji Superia 200. Have a Look on flickriver to see the style and tendency of the films. Kr Klaus
Guest Ansel_Adams Posted June 22, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 22, 2014 Portra 400. Excellent film.
sblitz Posted June 22, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2014 Given that it is summer, I would suggest portra 160, gives you more choice for f stop on a sunny day unless you carry ND filters with you. i have tried ektar 100 and found it great but not so good if the exposure isn't exact, portra (160, 400 or 800) gives you a lot more latitude.
gberger Posted June 22, 2014 Share #5 Posted June 22, 2014 Several years ago, my wife and I used 160 film in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam, We had 400 film, but didn't need it. (35 and 50mm Summicron lenses)
DigitalHeMan Posted June 22, 2014 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2014 The weather in Amsterdam this week should be pretty fine, so, depending upon your shooting style, you will probably find 160 is fast enough, so grab a few rolls of Portra and you should be good
philipus Posted June 22, 2014 Share #7 Posted June 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) There's quite a lot of redish brick buildlings in Amsterdams so getting the reds right could be important. A netural film will of course be the easiest. Portra 160 isn't bad but I'm not always thrilled with it (I generally prefer slides these days). Don't forget that you can easily buy rebranded Fuij Superia at the Hema chain, three for approx 8€. And the Kruidvat chain has Agfaphoto Vista in 200 and 400 for very little. These are in my experience perfectly acceptable films. Cheers Philip
bideford Posted June 22, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 22, 2014 Poundland in the UK currently has Agfaphoto Vista Plus 200 and 400 at £1 a roll (24 exposures). Easy choice to make...... James

drk_1981 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted June 23, 2014 Thanks guys for the feedbacks! I've got myself a box of Porta 400 just a few minutes ago, from my camera store on my way to my office, figured can't be wrong with this one....however I'll grab myself also some of those Fuji superia's as I've come to like their b&w films in the recent months ... wish you all a great week with lots of great photos

Fuji Superia 100 and XTRA 400 are surprisingly good for consumer films, and are much cheaper, too. Portra has a much smoother and creamier look, though. Enjoy your shooting!
A miller Posted June 24, 2014 Share #12 Posted June 24, 2014 I agree with the Portra 400 decision. The 160 is nice although it isn't the same as the 400 just faster; it has a different rendering. I personally like the 400 better in any light conditions save for very sunny conditions. I would also take some Fuji Provia 100 slide film. I think this film gives the absolute best real life colors, which would be great for the historic buildings, canals and structures that you will encounter. You'll need to pay extra attention to your exposure, as the highlights clip very easily. But for this concern, I would use this film exclusively for color. I also would take some CineStill 800 cinematic tungsten film for indoors and night strolls. Easily pushable one or two stops with great results. I took this film with me to a business trip to London this past winter and had great results. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/architecture/314092-jpmorgan-executive-conference-suite-canary-wharf.html
