jmr237 Posted June 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I borrowed an M7 for a few days and thought the finder seemed cluttered with each setting showing two sets of frame lines (135/35, 50/75, 28/90). Is this something you get used to? Having just 3 frame lines is offered as an a la carte option for the .72 magnification, and I'm wondering if it's worth it. I don't expect to use 135 or 75mm lenses, and the 28 lines are so close to the edge you can just compose to the finder itself.
Advertisement Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Hi jmr237, Take a look here 6 frame lines too cluttered?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
CalArts 99 Posted June 19, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2014 You can have frame lines masked out at any time by a good independent Leica tech. It's very inexpensive to have done. I have only 28, 35, and 50 on my M6, and the 35 and 50 on my M4. That way there is only one set of frame lines appearing at a time (I only own 28, 35, and 50mm lenses so the other frame lines aren't needed at all.) luigi bertolotti Posted June 19, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 19, 2014 AH.... that's a perennial debate from the times of M4 P intro (the first Leica with the 6 frames set) : lot of people, me included, are accustomed to , even if, as for me, I sometime get a bit nervous with the 50/75 pair , and when happens that I take on my M3 I say "wow! that's a CLEAN finder !!" But... you have what you deserve... : I am a people who LIKES (too much, and irrationally...) to have various focals... have 28 35 50 75 90 135 (not to mention the others... ) and, be it annoying or not, I cannot complain to have 6 frames. If you are a photog who prefers to stick on just 2 or 3 focals (as, many great photographers did and do) maybe the a la carte option is the best choice : by the way, Mark Norton ( http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/67857-anatomy-leica-m8-framelines.html) has shown that "obliterating" one or more framelines is an almost trivial job... IN ITSELF... dismounting and remounting all is needed to make this trivial job is another matter...

After seeing this I finally understand this "masks" thing I see mentioned. I had the framelines on my MP a la carte changed and wondered how one would do that, and I admire how the VF's creators did do that. (I put a good deal more value on 'clever' than I do on 'smart'.) thanks again, s-a
jmr237 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted June 19, 2014 If you have some of the frame lines masked out as part of an a la carte order, can you later have them unmasked and hence visible?
250swb Posted June 19, 2014 Share #6 Posted June 19, 2014 You get used to the frame lines. Steve

I got rid of only the 75's because I've never had one in my life and they were too close to the 50's for my liking. The other framesets were combinations I didn't want. A la carte is not totally flexible, but if you threw enough money at Leica things might happen. Or get the standard set and spend the savings having a Leica tech get rid of the ones you don't want. s-a

semi-ambivalent Posted June 20, 2014 Share #10 Posted June 20, 2014 fwiw, Don Goldberg (DAG) charged me $15.00 USD per each set of frame lines. lol. From Leica a la carte, I paid $180 to have just the 75 removed (0.72-5). My desire for a 135mm is fading and, seeing now just how far out the 28 lines are, the 0.75-3 set would give me what I use and be pretty clean. What was the turnaround time from Don (he's usually very busy)? thanks, s-a

CalArts 99 Posted June 20, 2014 Share #12 Posted June 20, 2014 What was the turnaround time from Don (he's usually very busy)? Don will ask you when you need the camera back. When I sent my M4 in to have the frame lines masked, I told him I wasn't in a rush. He had the camera for 6 weeks. But he also fabricated a finger guard for the lens release button. I think it kind of depends on his schedule at any given time and how insistent you might be about needing it back. But I've never told him I was in a rush for anything, and never called him or emailed him about the progress or bugged him while he's working on my stuff.... Welcome, dear visitor! Berth Posted June 20, 2014 Share #13 Posted June 20, 2014 6 frame lines at once? Cluttered indeed. Two at a time? Not so much.
