Leicavit for MP?

Recommended Posts

Hi to everyone,

I have decided to go ahead an get a MP. I am contemplating the Leicavit. Any one out there with any suggestions, recommendations regarding using/getting this with the MP? Is it worth the money, and trouble. It obviously makes the camera slightly bigger, but its useful for quick consecutive shooting, almost as good as the motor-drive, I believe?

Anyhow, the idea of this appeals to me, but maybe there are those of you who have used this, and can confirm, or advise against it?

ANy suggestions, help, and experience would be appreciated

Many Thanks, and Best Regards

Lacapino

I have the current version of the Leicavit and find it useful for sequence shooting, especially as I am left-eye dominant. It allows for film advance without moving the camera away from my eye. It is not as fast as a battery-driven motor, however.

They also make a case for the MP, Leicavit, and small lens.

I have been using one on my chrome MP. I love it. The slight increase in height and weight does not bother me at all.

I use the case as a half case. I believe it will accept the following lenses, with lens hoods:

35/2, 50/2.8, 50/2.5 and 35/1.4 (not ASPH version).

...as always, Lacapino, if possible, try before you buy. I got a Leicavit (+ case) approximately eight years ago and even though the thinking at the time was "left-eye dominant so I will benefit from a Leicavit", it has seen very little action. Turns out that for me, the size of the basic M combo (body+lens) ranks very high in my particular hierarchy of needs.

I have two M7's both with Motor M's. I also have a Leicavit which I never use.

The Leicavit bounces the camera around during sequence usage.

The Motor M just stays in position and you just shoot in either the I or II speed.

If you do not contemplate sequence photography, then the Leicavit would be useful for left eye photography as I shoot left eye. But for everything else, the rapid wind lever is fine.-Dick

I have Rapidwinders and Leicavits. The added height makes the camera easier for me to hold - that may not be the case for you. The Leicavit is smaller and lighter and has one fiddly tendency - the lever will fold back into the bottom of the winder if you're not careful. The Rapidwinder is more industrial and you have to release a catch on the lever to fold it back in. BTW, both are wonderful if you shoot sequences or wear gloves. Never had a mechanical problem with either.

Thanks for that. My hands have a great spread, a range that piano players might wish, but only a few of my fingers are mobile due to injuries, and the reason I mention that is to highlight what we presume of ergonomics. I suspect very many of us do not fit the ideal regardless of handicaps. In other words a re- evaluation of ergonomics is in order and Leica could care less. Leica is not innovative in this respect, nor are any other designers.

I'm bumping this thread to see if anyone with this case knows if the current summilux 50mm will work / fit in the case? None of my local dealers has this case in stock, so I'd have to have them order it to see if it will accommodate the lux 50. My local dealers are split in terms of their opinion as to whether the case will accomodate the lux 50.

I have been using the Leicavit on my MP for quite a while. I really like and is now a permanent figure on my camera. Here are the bullet points.

(1) So much comfortable for my hands because my pinkie is now resting on the camera; not under the camera. it does give me a firmer grip.

(2) It doesn't really make me shoot faster. (a) I don't shoot that what where I need shots in sequence - although a bit of practice can help me get a better handle of it. (B) When I do use the winder, I don't really leave the camera at my eye level. I find myself tending to bring the camera down, wind then bring it back up. Again, practice would help this a lot.

A black chrome Leicavit was the only used accessory that was bought last year.

It allows several photos in a row without removing the camera from the focusing eye.

Why is there for digital Leica M no "Leicavit", in which an additional powerful battery is installed?

Hi Lacapino,

my Leicavit is black chrome and I use it on my Leica M7. Leica even engraved it for me with the old swung script "Leicavit" on the front which can be found on the old original Leicavits.

Best Regards from Germany,

Just wanted to follow up with the question I asked, regarding whether or not the MP Leicavit Case will fit with the current 50mm lux attached. It does! Turns out one of the dealers I talked to last week ordered it and I was able to check it out this morning.

On a separate note, the dealer told me that the ever ready cases for the M9/M-E/MM have been discontinued. I was suprised to hear that since the M-E and MM are still in production.

I got a really good deal buying the MP + Leicavit new for € 2250,- That was in 2005....

I use the Leicavit for half a year. Then decided, that it did not ad much to my shooting and the camera got bigger than I was used to and did not like that. I sold the Leicavit and that was it. Did not regret it. The MP is wonderful as it is without the Leicavit.

I found the Leica M Motor better than a Leicavit because adds little more bulk, includes a grip and has the same functionality.

(I use a motor or Abrahamsson Rapidwinder on every film M Leica I have except the M4s.)
