SillyBun Posted August 18, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) How do you know if you bought a new unit? Is the M 240 sealed in the box?
Advertisement Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Hi SillyBun, Take a look here Is it new?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 18, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 18, 2014 By buying from a reputed dealer. Buying online may get you a unit that somebody returned.
Mike Rawcs Posted August 18, 2014 Share #3 Posted August 18, 2014 The box should be sealed; other manufacturers do it and so should Leica.
tookaphotoof Posted August 18, 2014 Share #4 Posted August 18, 2014 I picked it up at Wetzlar. Silver box which was protected by a flimsy carton box. Neither of them were sealed. Anyways, it usually is a 10 second job for a shop if they want to seal your box in plastic. It says nothing about being used or not.
Mike Rawcs Posted August 18, 2014 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2014 I picked it up at Wetzlar. Silver box which was protected by a flimsy carton box. Neither of them were sealed. Anyways, it usually is a 10 second job for a shop if they want to seal your box in plastic. It says nothing about being used or not. The seal on the box is usually a small sticky tab or similar. Normally you would cut it with scissors as trying to peel it off would damage the surface of the box.
tookaphotoof Posted August 18, 2014 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2014 Didn't have it. But I think I can trust them at Wetzlar.
ayewing Posted August 18, 2014 Share #7 Posted August 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Neither my M9 nor M240 were sealed. The passport application card was inside the box duly stamped by the Leica dealer.
jaapv Posted August 18, 2014 Share #8 Posted August 18, 2014 They could not have stamped the card without opening the box. It is not unusual for a dealer to check the contents before delivery.
Bill W Posted August 18, 2014 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2014 I have received units (M240 and MM) sealed and not sealed but since I was on a waiting list the new units were shipped to me the day the dealer received them. Not a big deal if you are dealing with a dealer you know.
jto555 Posted August 18, 2014 Share #10 Posted August 18, 2014 My dealer opens the box in front of you 'to make sure everything is there'. It does my head in!
Naper Posted August 18, 2014 Share #11 Posted August 18, 2014 If you received the full 2 year warranty you have a new camera. Returns, demos or refurbished are 1 year.
lct Posted August 18, 2014 Share #12 Posted August 18, 2014 I expect my dealers to test their bodies before delivery so i don't want sealed samples in any way.

bocaburger Posted August 18, 2014 Share #14 Posted August 18, 2014 If you received the full 2 year warranty you have a new camera. Returns, demos or refurbished are 1 year. My clearly-marked demo (never sold to a customer) came with a 2-year warranty. The "Certified Pre-Owned" ones come with a 1 yr.
SillyBun Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted August 18, 2014 So, there is no way to tell if the camera is brand new. No counter whatsoever?
tookaphotoof Posted August 18, 2014 Share #16 Posted August 18, 2014 My brandnew car came with over 10 kilometers on the odo. Guess they put some diesel in it and took it for a spin to see if the car was alright. Would appreciate if Leica made a couple of test shots to see if it works? jto555 Posted August 18, 2014 Share #17 Posted August 18, 2014 I expect my dealers to test their bodies before delivery so i don't want sealed samples in any way. My dealer doesn't test the camera; he just opens the box in front of me to check all the bits are there. Which does take the unboxing experience away from me. And after spending over €20,000 on a system, I do like to have the unboxing experience to reaffirm my purchase decision. If there is something missing, trust me, I will let them know. As for testing the camera, I expect Leica to do that in the factory. In fact, since November 2013, Leica are currently on their 4th opportunity to test my camera!!! Sorry folks, rant over. From the M8 and M9 we know that cameras come with up to 200 test shots on the counter.
Echo63 Posted August 19, 2014 Share #19 Posted August 19, 2014 From the M8 and M9 we know that cameras come with up to 200 test shots on the counter. My M240s file numbering was on zero when i got it. I would assume there is a few hundred test shots put on it by Leica before it leaves the factory though. I trust my dealer, there was a sticky tab holding the grey carton shut I was going to ask them to open the box and put the battery on charge for me

As far as i'm concerned i'm used to use cameras for professional needs so it's a tool i expect to receive and the way it's been boxed or unboxed is of little interest to me. YMMV.
