The 21 to catch the tall skyscrapers the 35 to catch the speeding taxis the 50 to catch the city that never sleeps the 90 to catch the small things that got away The Photo Village Adorama
4X5B&W Posted June 7, 2008 Share #3 Posted June 7, 2008 You will need wide angles for sure, probably nothing longer than a 50.
sliversurger Posted June 7, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 7, 2008 I just came back from New York couple of weeks ago and I had my M8 with 35 Summarit. If you're only carrying one lens, bring the 35. I did alot of street shots and the 35 for me provided great range. Also go to Flickr and check out some New York Photo groups. I had a chance to go to Photo Village to pick up a Luigi case and strap. Person working there was Will, a great guy, very helpful. They have lots of stuff and you can check out their inventory on-line.
jbfilm Posted June 7, 2008 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2008 Do the gutsy thing, take the 21 only. I have done that on more than one occasion. it will be the most fun you ever had with this great lens. And New York is the perfect place to try something this radical.
afineman Posted June 7, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 7, 2008 personally i use my 21 90% of the time here in NYC, at night i use my 28 f2.0 also, while you are in the city, if you like bbq check out Fette Sau in williamsburg brooklyn, take it from a transplanted southerner, it's great! just skip the sides, go for the meat and beer or whiskey. diogenis Posted June 7, 2008 Share #7 Posted June 7, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I also used the 28cron, but it wasn't enough for them skyscrapers. Get the 21 and 50... If you want to travel light get only the 21 indeed
WmAl Posted June 7, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 7, 2008 M8 & 21mm lens. It was my first lens and I got plenty of good shots in NYC. Welcome, dear visitor! Ecaton Posted June 7, 2008 Share #9 Posted June 7, 2008 The 21 is perfect for NY and you might want to consider adding a CV15. Manhattan is CV15 land. I spent last weekend in NY, with CV15, Elmarit 24 and Cron75. The 75 was nice to have with me, but wiiiide is what you really need in the big apple. Enjoy your trip:D
Mauribix Posted June 7, 2008 Share #10 Posted June 7, 2008 You will need definitely all four. ... and a caddy too...
mat_mcdermott Posted June 7, 2008 Share #11 Posted June 7, 2008 Person working there was Will, a great guy, very helpful. They have lots of stuff and you can check out their inventory on-line. I wholly like Photo Village and agree that Will is very helpful, but calling them is better than online for checking inventory. They move a lot of stuff and the website isn't always accurate: listing stuff that isn't in stock anymore and not having the latest new arrivals. mustafasoleiman Posted June 7, 2008 Share #12 Posted June 7, 2008 ... and a caddy too... A caddy for four lenses and one M8? I always travel with two M8 and a12/28/75/135, in a small shoulder bag, where I can also fit my MacBook Air, when I am actually traveling. danyves Posted June 7, 2008 Share #13 Posted June 7, 2008 21mm definitively, and maybe the 35mm, but not necessarily.

jbfilm Posted June 7, 2008 Share #15 Posted June 7, 2008 I am only a new yorker by religion..! I visit 4-5 times a year. My last visit was a couple of weeks ago. Here's my short list of worthwhile, less visited places. 1-Harlem west, between 132 and 125 street, there is a beautiful small vegetable and food market on 132 street and Riverside dr. And if you are into BBQ, check out Dinosaur BBQ nearby, good ribs and great music, they will let you take pictures. 2- The Chelsea Photo-gallery circuit on Saturday. photograph :: exhibitions 3- Walk the Brooklyn bridge early morning or evening 4- Columbus park in China town 5- Upper west side, near Columbia 6- There a small sidewalk median on the middle of the intersection of Broadway, 5th ave and 23rd street, stand on it between the traffic looking south and gaze on the Flatiron building, preferably in the evening, it's mesmerizing. Bon Voyage. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Susan_NYC Posted June 8, 2008 Share #17 Posted June 8, 2008 I've shot almost exclusively in New York City. Anything is interesting if you look closely. Just shoot and don't worry about interesting. That said, I'll suggest you shoot in subways - on platforms, in the subway cars. It's legal, regardless of what anyone might tell you. A favorite indoor place (if it's too hot or rainy) is the Museum of Modern Art - Fridays free after 4pm (otherwise $20). You can shoot in all the permanent exhibit rooms - art they own - not in temporary exhibitions (usually). The people are really interesting. Just hop on a subway to Brooklyn or Queens and get off anywhere and shoot. Queens, take the #7 to Flushing, last stop. I could go on and on. NYC is great. Advice about lens to carry: I usually shoot with the 35mm lux if I'm going out at dusk/later, and the elmarit 28mm/2.8 during the day.
grober Posted June 8, 2008 Share #18 Posted June 8, 2008 Take just the 21 and the 50 to lighten your load for the day. You'll spend 80% of the time shooting with the 21. Don't forget an extra charged battery and memory card! If you are an art museum crawler like we are and want to avoid rush hour, just stay in the Met all day, have dinner in their cafeteria and then leisurely drive home after rush hour abates. We have found the food there surprisingly good. (Be sure to check which days of the week that the Met is open late.) -g
Mauribix Posted June 8, 2008 Share #19 Posted June 8, 2008 A caddy for four lenses and one M8?I always travel with two M8 and a12/28/75/135, in a small shoulder bag, where I can also fit my MacBook Air, when I am actually traveling. I was just joking about three of the four heavier lenses for M cameras... I'm always willing to carry all my lenses, but finally when I go out I usually take 1 or 2 lenses... 12+35 or 35+50 or (when I'm particularly trained) 12+35+75 (or 90) :D

(I ALWAYS have an m8/28 on me... always) But if I am going to a new place with the intentions to take shots, especially if it's out of town, I make the extra effort and carry all my guns.
