stephengv Posted March 16, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 16, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm currently in the market for a 35mm lens. I own a 50mm Summicron and a voigtlander 21mm. is the 35mm Summicron ASPH worth it? Does it flare a lot? is there a big difference between the 50mm and 35mm?
Advertisement Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Hi stephengv, Take a look here 35mm Summicron ASPH worth it?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Luke_Miller Posted March 16, 2015 Share #2 Posted March 16, 2015 It is my most used lens on the M9, just as the 28 Summicron was on my M8.2. Haven't seen any flare, but I always use the hood. Enough wider than the 50 Summicron to make it worthwhile for me.
wda Posted March 16, 2015 Share #3 Posted March 16, 2015 35mm and 50mm are my two most used focal lengths. Yes it is worth it if it is on your shortlist.
lct Posted March 17, 2015 Share #4 Posted March 17, 2015 ...Does it flare a lot? is there a big difference between the 50mm and 35mm? The 35/2 asph flares a bit less than the previous 35/2 v4 and a bit more than the 35/2.5. Fears mainly strong light sources being just outside the frame, a bright window in a dark room for instance. Same for the current 50/2 non apo more or less.
skinnfell Posted March 17, 2015 Share #5 Posted March 17, 2015 (edited) Worth it? Yes, I think so. Its becoming my most used (out of six) Leica lens. It is very uniformly sharp, handles beautifully and flare is not the issue its made out to be. 50 cron flares MUCH more badly, so if that one hasnt scared you off yet then I doubt the 35 asph will. Big difference between 35 and 50? YES! It is probably the lens focal lenght increment that has the most difference. (Say, than from 35 to 28 or from 50 to 75 etc) This is probably because they straddle the normal (point of neither wide or tele) which is 43mm or thereabouts. In addition, most m leicas nowadays are made with .72 viewfinders which greatly favors 35mm lenses. Edited March 17, 2015 by skinnfell
thighslapper Posted March 17, 2015 Share #6 Posted March 17, 2015 Look at the new Zeiss 35/1.4 before you jump ........ Apart from being a bit larger it has a lot to commend it (see the posts here) To be honest I've never used my 35/2 much ....... and until I got the Zeiss I tended to miss out the bit between 21 and 50 .......
Mornnb Posted March 18, 2015 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Zeiss 35mm 1.4 is giving the Summilux a run for it's money, at the price of the Summicron.
Ronazle Posted March 19, 2015 Share #8 Posted March 19, 2015 In this century the 35mm Cron is my most used lens. It is small, absolutely fantastic rendition, and tack sharp. I have quite a few lenses; it is the absolute last one I would give up. Regards, Ron
jaapv Posted March 19, 2015 Share #9 Posted March 19, 2015 Despite not being the fastest lens Leica makes, it is a low light favorite of mine; it draws beautifully at night.
stephengv Posted March 19, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted March 19, 2015 Is there a big difference between this one and the summarit?
jaapv Posted March 19, 2015 Share #11 Posted March 19, 2015 Practical differences between lenses at this level are always subtle and esthetic. It is a matter of liking the way a lens renders. It is a personal preference that can only be formed by looking at (one’s own) images.
lct Posted March 19, 2015 Share #12 Posted March 19, 2015 Is there a big difference between this one and the summarit? I have no experience with the current 35/2.4 but the 35/2.5 has less flare and less sharpness on edges and corners. Its focus ring is also loser, on my sample at least, and it is slightly smaller and lighter than the 35/2 asph.
LYCAN Posted March 19, 2015 Share #13 Posted March 19, 2015 There is a very big difference between 50mm and 35mm! I use my 2/35 asph a lot - it's one of my favourite lenses.
sml_photo Posted March 19, 2015 Share #14 Posted March 19, 2015 Just got this lens last week and after two "road tests," I am totally pleased. Easy to use, small, sharp from corner to corner...less wide angle distortion than I have experienced with this focal length. However, I notice that the (round) lens shade that came with the lens (part of Safari package) comes off easier than I expected. I can actually pull it off without pinching and with very little effort. Is that normal?
wattsy Posted March 19, 2015 Share #15 Posted March 19, 2015 However, I notice that the (round) lens shade that came with the lens (part of Safari package) comes off easier than I expected. I can actually pull it off without pinching and with very little effort. Is that normal? Probably. The round hoods for the 35 Summicron are a waste of time. I used to have the black paint version of this lens and the circular hood that it came with wasn't very impressive. I bought the standard 12526 hood as an accessory and used that instead. I'd recommend you do the same with your safari lens.

Its a known issue.

I can actually pull it off without pinching and with very little effort. Is that normal? If it is the silver 12504 i would say no as my black 12504 does not pull off w/o pinching at all.
Herr Barnack Posted March 19, 2015 Share #18 Posted March 19, 2015 ...is the 35mm Summicron ASPH worth it? ...is there a big difference between the 50mm and 35mm? Only you can answer the "worth it" question; I'm not really sure how you are defining worth. In terms of angle of view, there is a very large difference between the 50mm and the 35mm. The difference between the 35mm and the 28mm is small when considered against the 50 vs. 35 compairson.
asiafish Posted March 20, 2015 Share #19 Posted March 20, 2015 Is there a big difference between this one and the summarit? They render very differently. Cron is sharper in the corners at wide apertures, more clinical (perfect?) all around. Summarit has a bit more of a classic rendering and IMO smoother bokeh. I prefer the Summarit. My round shade sits perfectly. /Anders
