I noticed lubricant on the tips of the aperture blades of my 15-year-old APO 180mm and inquired with Leica whether this should be a concern. Their answer was yes, “if lubricant is where it is not supposed to be, then there is also an issue of where the lubricant is missing.” Good thinking, :p

My general question is about long-term lens care. Because I shoot most often with my lens set wide open, or one stop down, the diaphragms on my M and R lenses are rarely closed up much. Do the sages here have suggestions from experience about the necessity, or not, of working lens diaphragms? Is lubricant on diaphragm blades also a potential contaminant for the delicate coatings on interior elements (my original query to Leica)?

Simple CLA in Wetzlar has run me US$450, so I have grown thoughtful about preventative care.

One of lenses in my inventory is Micro Nikkor 55mm AiS f2.8 which has reputation for developing oily aperture blades. Mine is clean and only reason despite noteriaty I bought it on the cheap is for slide duplication.

Advice i adhere to is to store lens in upright condition and away from heat sources
