Stealth3kpl Posted November 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2014 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) In an effort to reduce the number of 35mm M lenses I own, I bought another.........er....... I found myself purchasing a 35 Summilux 11870. I'm hoping it will replace my 35 Summicron V4 (which I keep for its Mandler character) and my 35 f2.8 Summaron (which I keep because it looks nice, and it's very sharp at normal taking apertures around f5.6). Was it a good idea? I was motivated by wanting a little extra versatility in low light, in a lighter-weight lens (cf FLE) whilst trekking. I use film, not digital. Ultimately, this will leave me with the 35 lux, 35 lux FLE, and 35 Summicron Asph. Pete Edited November 16, 2014 by Stealth3kpl

M9reno Posted November 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 16, 2014 I have a screw-mount 35 Summaron f/2.8 which I used successfully this summer as a one-lens, one-camera (M2) on a two-week cruise in Turkey. It worked beautifully with Ektar and HP5 Plus. My other lens in the 35 department is the Summilux FLE, which is too big and bulky, too "clinical", rarely use, and which I've been on the verge of selling for a long time. The only thing holding me back is the maxim "never sell a Leica lens."
a911s Posted November 17, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 17, 2014 I never found a really good 35 Summilux pre-asph lens after testing two samples. The 35 Summicron V4 is sharper IMO although the optical design appears similar. The 35 f2.8 Summaron has a very unique look I value, so I sold the Summilux and kept the V4 and Summaron.

Each has its own unique look... optical perfection, classical 90s and 60s glow. But my choice is/was version 4 on my M9 and Summaron on my M2R.
luigi bertolotti Posted November 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 17, 2014 Well... having already a Lux 35 FLE.... let's say that adding a Summilux "unasph" is a nice move for a collector... ... they are indeed so nice to see (so nice that I have one chrome and one black... and resist the temptation to have a "goggled".... ) How many times do you NEED 1,4 whn trekking ? The Summicron asph is appreciably compact (not as the Lux unasph, indeed) an better at any f stop. If you look for a compact all around 35... there is always the Summaron 3,5 A36.... from a collector to a collector... is a smart buy.
IWC Doppel Posted November 18, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 18, 2014 I'd keep the 'new' Summilux, Summaron, MkIV Summicron and sell the Summicron ASPH. Great though the Summicron ASPH is it hasn't the character or qualities of the MkIV or to a degree Summaron IMO. At F2.8-F4 I much prefer the Mk IV as well over the ASPH.
Stealth3kpl Posted November 18, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted November 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, now that the lens has arrived, I see that there's quite a lot of dust inside, some quite big particles. I'm going to return it anyway. Why do people advertise a lens saying "no internal dust" when it quite obviously isn't the case. I know some dust is the norm in older lenses, but really, some particles look like chips of black paint! Pete

hendriphile Posted November 25, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 25, 2014 Looks like a good move. You would have regretted selling the Summaron for its B&W and close- up performance.
