bideford Posted November 2, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone any views on this lens? There seems to be very little out there - especially recently published - very few images on Flickr etc.. I was looking for a faster 75mm lens than my CV 75mm 2.5 and chanced upon one from a trader I have used before online. It's (limited) reputation was that it was sharp wide open with very smooth oof. Seemed to fit the bill and was less than the next obvious choice of a used CV 75mm 1.8 - which has a reputation as a portrait lens (so perhaps less sharp wide open). Received it the next day (yesterday) and I am amazed with the test shots - even at high iso. Simply stunning - I cannot believe there is not more information out there. Once I get sorted I'll get some images up - have put one on the "view from older glasss" thread for starters. Are there many of these lenses out there? Advertisement Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Hi bideford, Take a look here Canon 85mm 1.8 LTM. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted November 2, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2014 This lens has a very high reputation as a portrait lens (but not for exceptional/excessive softness). Congratulations on finding one - I was looking for one earlier this year, but I hardly saw one this side of the Atlantic. I heard they are heavy - is that the case?
bideford Posted November 2, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted November 2, 2014 Hi Paul, It is a beast at 481g and 70mm long with 58mm filters! James
LocalHero1953 Posted November 2, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 2, 2014 I did get a Nikkor 85 f/2 in chrome. That is also heavy! The longer Nikkor 105 f/2.5 in black paint feels a much better weight and balance.
pico Posted November 3, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 3, 2014 Anyone any views on this lens? There seems to be very little out there - especially recently published - very few images on Flickr etc.. There were several different Canon 85mm LTM lenses, so it is difficult to narrow them down to specifics. Here is a picture made with one. I cannot remember which. Sorry. Buy and good luck to you! .
Ecar Posted November 3, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 3, 2014 Congratulations! The 85/1.8 is hard to find, relatively expensive and arguably the best Canon 85mm RF lens made. It's definitely one of my favourites, particularly on the MM. If you like its rendering, you may want to have a go at its older sibling, the 100/2.

bideford Posted November 5, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted November 5, 2014 A couple of shots to test both sharpness and oof - wide open and at iso 3200 on an M (with EVF). I'd say surprisingly sharp and smooth, respectively. All of interior details - Leeds Central Library. James
philipus Posted November 6, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 6, 2014 Canon also has pages on the various lenses they have released. http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/lens/s/50-85.html
bideford Posted November 6, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted November 6, 2014 Canon also has pages on the various lenses they have released. Canon Camera Museum | Lens Hall - S Lenses Thanks philipus - I have seen this, however this limited information (i.e. lens specifications) is fairly easy to find on a couple of other sites/posts. I'm surprised that there are not many images posted anywhere other than the few found fairly easily searching the web. Given the limited (but decidedly positive comments/posts etc. that there are) I would have thought that there would be more out there. Perhaps the lens is rarer than I thought? James Hi James, I have one as well, have to use it more ! Had to make specific shims to have it calibrated on my M9, nearly nailed it. Will post more soon on the http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-lenses/253049-view-through-older-glass-111.html thread. uhoh7 Posted November 8, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 8, 2014 a few more: L1024204 by unoh7, f/4 L1024195 by unoh7, on Flickr You don't see much about them, because few were made, and they rarely come up for sale. All the Canon 85s were very good. This one is great.

jamriman Posted November 8, 2014 Share #15 Posted November 8, 2014 Would anybody dare put it up against a 75 lux? What would you code it for? Thanks.
MarkP Posted November 8, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 8, 2014 It's a telephoto, albeit short, so coding is not essential.
bideford Posted November 8, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted November 8, 2014 Would anybody dare put it up against a 75 lux? What would you code it for? Thanks. It would be interesting! I have a CV 75mm and Tele-Elmarit 90mm that I have done some quick comparisons at various apertures and 200/3200 iso on an M and it certainly performs well at the equivalent f stop of 2.8 for all three. At 1.8 you would expect some fall off but it still remains sharp. I would like to see how it performs against a 75 Summilux at 1.8. I have not tested focus shift and again it would be interesting to see how it compares. Given the lack of information/images around on what is obviously a stellar lens I suspect that this is harder to find available than hens teeth. uhoh7 Posted November 9, 2014 Share #18 Posted November 9, 2014 (edited) Would anybody dare put it up against a 75 lux? What would you code it for? Thanks. we know who will win at f/1.4 A clean copy of the 85/1.8 is considered by some to be the best RF lens ever made by Canon. "Against the Lux", LOL If I had a 75 Lux I would sleep with it. Funny though many who do have one rarely use it. Canon is about 470 grams, while the Lux is a front heavy 560 grams. But the real 200 gram Canon RF sleeper is: photo (2) by unoh7, Canon RF 100/3.5 DSC08099-1 by unoh7,Canon Brochure This little thing, if clean, is wicked wicked sharp. I also have a LN copy of that you 85/1.9 you see in the brochure, which is a gorgeous 600 gram thing with many blades. The Lux is not the best lens to compare these old ones to, because it's half old-school too! Put that little 100 up against the macro elmar or CV 90/3.5 and the biggest difference you see I think is in the colors. The modern RF glass makes very very rich color. One the other hand maybe you want the older muddy look in some situations, or maybe you are shooting B&W. Also note the prices. In today's dollars the 1.9 would have cost $1480. uhoh7 Posted November 9, 2014 Share #19 Posted November 9, 2014 (edited) the 85/1.9, designed by Hiroshi Itoh, in the flesh: DSC01608 by unoh7, on Flickr Unless I'm mistaken this is not a telephoto. Unlike the 1.8, which is near unobtanium, the 1.9 can be found for around 200USD or even less. It has an incredible build, and appears stellar, but it's much heavier than the 1.8. There was a late "black version" of this same lens, which might be lighter. PS what a shame this forum is so often crazy slow to load.
