Are any forum members gettin the 50mm APO len?

FWIW, a listing popped up on ebay from an authrotized dealer called Norman Camera Company. He was asking regular retailed price and said that he had just rec'd the lens from Leica a couple of days earlier. It must have sold very quickly b/c it is no longer listed.

Given the issues with the flare, I wonder whether in order to ensure that you acquire a version w/o the issue (as opposed to a recycled problem version), it is wise to wait until the inventory has been replenished at dealers, at least to a reasonable level.

I had ordered one 9 months ago but never heard back from that dealer (who I'd purchased other new Lens's from).

I had been away from the forum for awhile and then yesterday I got referred by a forum member to a dealer who had one and it's now in transit to me.

so they are popping up here and there if you pay attention and move quickly.

is mine fresh inventory or recycled?

don't know, and not sure it matters.

I got mine after appr. two weeks of waiting in early august. I was down the list at my dealer but the people in front of me decided to skip it. The dealer said that people just get on the list to see it since there is no obligation to buy, but the price is a limiting factor for many. My feeling is that it is not that hard to find as some will have you believe.

I tested it aginst the 50 summilux which is also extremely nice. I had real doubts if I should spend so much extra money but I decided to go ahead. And, I can tell you, it is a lens that really grows on me. At first, It doesnt have anything spectacular effects about it, its just a nice little lens. So then you might wonder why you paid so much for a lens, that doesnt do anything "special". But when you get to know it better you will you will start to see that the image quality is outstanding. Unfortunately, it will show the short comings of your other nice Leica lenses also ;-)

The physical size of the lens is very nice and it suits the M body harmoniously. It is the ultimate 50 mm standard lens, in my eyes.

Better than the Nocti, and I had both the 1.0 and the 0.95.

Two wildly different lenses for completely different uses that can't be compared (APO-Summicron and either of the Noctilux'es), other than that they share a similar focal length. How can one be better than the other?

2 summicron APO's had come up on my local Craigslist in the last 2 months.

Took them a few weeks to sell I believe as the postings stayed up for a bit.

My local Leica Boutique also has the 50 APO in stock everytime I browse (same with the regular black noct.)

They advised me that the Leica Boutiques have priority for getting cameras and lenses since their shelves are never empty with bodies and lenses!

If you make this statement you must not have all 3 lenses in this discussion.

The Noctilux is intended for a different use, but you can certainly compare rendition, bokeh and sharpness. In fact at the LHSA meeting this last weekend there was a bench test of 20 or more 50mm lenses. The APO Summicron was clearly the winner on all three counts. Look for an article in an upcoming Viewfinder Magazine if you are an LHSA member.

I couldn't agree with you more.

My point is that you don't buy the Noctilux for it's transparent rendering, sharpness and lack of distortion. So I find it mildly stupid to even compare them. Two very different lenses for very different uses.

I don't know what LHSA is, and have no interest in photo gear magazines. I use Leica because of the manual nature of the system, and the compactness. I'll leave the Leica fanboyism to others, and treat every piece of Leica gear in the same critical manner and on par with every other manufacturer.

I have used an Otus 55/1.4 for a couple of weeks. So I guess comparing that to the Nocti, which I owned for a year, is basically almost the same in regards to lens characteristics between the APO-s and Nocti. Nobody buys a nocti for edge-to-edge razor sharp performance, lack of CA and distortion, and nobody buys a summicron for painterly and utterly minimal depth of field, with a twist of both modern and classical rendering... So how can one say which is the better lens when they cover two totally different uses? The only thing the Nocti and APO-S has in common is the focal length, nothing else.

Gee, why the hostility and insults? Did I call you stupid because you think lens comparisons are worthless? Of course they shouldn't be compared one to one because of the different uses. They are not substitutes and I did say up front that the Noctilux was different. That doesn't mean it isn't interesting to see how different lenses of the same focal length draw and how they do in terms of sharpness. Or fun. Isn't it okay to have fun? Or is fun prohibited in your world along with lens comparisons?

When you see results from lenses side by side, you have a better idea of what the strengths and/or weaknesses are of each lens so when choosing you understand the strengths and limitations and use the right tool. Some people keep more than one kind of 50mm for that reason.

Maybe you wouldn't think everyone else is stupid if you actually listened to what they were saying.

By the way LHSA is The International Leica Society. the bench tests were of lots of lenses including Leica and Nikon and Canon and Zeiss, though we did not have an Otus. That would have been interesting. And fun. :)

If I write here that the 50APO is the best lens that Leica ever made, this means that this is my opinion! If you find it stupid when comparing them, that is your problem and not ours.:D:D
