I have a Tele-Elmarit 90mm (1966) with a missing lens hood. It appears the #12575 hood is the correct one that accompanies the lens.

Are there alternatives that are better in terms of reducing flare than this metal hood or should I just get this?

I have several of these hoods. They work fine.

I have never noticed a problem with them.

The metal hood # 12575 is certainly the best to reduce flare but the Tele-Elmarit was shipped with the rubber hood # 11250 which works fine as well. It is made for Series 5.5 filters (retained by the adapter ring # 11251) but one can screw the hood into a 39mm filter if need be. The metal hood # 12575 can be reversed on the lens for storage and transportation though.

I realise that your Tele-Elmarit is from 1966 so it is not a "thin" version contrary to what i thought sorry. The "fat" T-E had no rubber hood, only the metal hood # 12575 but it is a 39mm lens so the rubber hood of the "thin" T-E should fit as well. I have no experience with it though.

I have both T-E's and use the 12575. Deployed it's about 3/4 the length of the lens. And the the standard lens cap won't fit with the hood reversed, you'll need the dedicated one. I found that a 55mm pushbutton cap fits the wide end of the hood if you prefer capping it when in use. The rubber hood that came with the thin version cracked apart with age. So if you pick one up be sure it has no signs of cracks. I noted that the dimensions of the rubber hood are similar to the vented metal hood made for 35/50 (forgot the code#) and have used that also. Saves space when I'm packing 35, 50 and 90 lenses to use one hood for all.
