dem331 Posted September 18, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have this lens which I bought about 10-15 years ago. Lately I noticed that I was missing focus a lot and after thinking that I was using too many low shiuter speeds, forgetting to focus, etc, I traced it to this lens. I took it in to the repair person recommended in this forum in Madrid. He was snowed under - I have never seen so many cameras lined up for repair! He took a look at the lens, put it in to some machine whose name I can not remember, and asked me to look through the machine's viewfinder. It was a type of complex pattern. There you go, he said, it focuses perfectly! I insisted that it did not. My longer and wider aperture lenses focused perfectly on the same camera and with this one I kept on missing focus, and I had done detailed tests. He insisted that it must be the rangefinder. In the end he accepted to try it on a couple of M3s he had in the room, openning the back plate and looking through. He ended up agreeing that it was the lens. He said it was a bit "loose" and that when it was horizontal it would lose position, wheras face up on the test machine it would not. Hle would have to open it, grease it, and tighten it. Just thought I would share the experience in case anyone has comments. Rgds, Enrique

luigi bertolotti Posted September 18, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 18, 2014 ... He said it was a bit "loose" and that when it was horizontal it would lose position, wheras face up on the test machine it would not. ... I had identical issue on my Summarit 75... quickly fixed : I thought it couldn't happen on a Summicron 50... (and I have one of the same era as yours... 1988)
dem331 Posted September 19, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted September 19, 2014 Very interesting Luigi. I never really enjoyed the 50mm summicron, despite all the things I read, and maybe it was because the lens was out and was just getting progressively worse. Allways preferred results from other lenses. Maybe it will be like a new purchase once I get it back! Rgds, Enrique

Shac Posted September 19, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the tabbed version of the last non-Apo 50 Summicron (made in Germany) and the lens unit can be unscrewed. Different thread from the rigid Summicron though.
k-hawinkler Posted September 19, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 19, 2014 I have short mounts for 65, 90, and 135 mm lens heads. Are there short mounts for the above mentioned lens heads? TIA.
TomB_tx Posted September 19, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 19, 2014 The v3 (1969) 50mm Summicron uses the same head thread as the rigid, so it fits the same short mounts, etc.
dem331 Posted September 19, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted September 19, 2014 Thanks for all the info. So may be my lens just needed tightening?
lct Posted September 19, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 19, 2014 Yes perhaps but after 10+ years of use, a good CLA will give your lens a new youth anyway.
semi-ambivalent Posted September 21, 2014 Share #12 Posted September 21, 2014 I have the tabbed version. Ver. 4 of the last non-Apo 50 Summicron. Ver. 5 (made in Germany) and the lens unit can be unscrewed. Different thread from the rigid Summicron though. Shac, Do you know how this is done? Are there set screws somewhere or does one 'just torque' it? Thanks!, s-a
colmac Posted September 30, 2014 Share #13 Posted September 30, 2014 Just in case you lose your head, I noticed a 50mm Summicron (11819) head for sale at the Leica Store Vienna,... Col
lct Posted September 30, 2014 Share #14 Posted September 30, 2014 Curious indeed as the head of the 11819 (50/2 v4) is not detachable normally and was not sold separately if memory serves. Would you have a link? Just curious.

Printmaker Posted September 30, 2014 Share #19 Posted September 30, 2014 Years ago I had an adaptor that let me take the unscrewed head of my 50 Summicron and attach it to my enlarger. I only used it a few times as I had a set of Apo Rodenstock enlarging lenses that did a better job. This was in the early 70s so I've lost track of the bugger but I know I purchased the adaptor from a Leica store so it probably was a Leica part. Point is, the heads of many Leica lenses have been unscrewable for a very long time.
luigi bertolotti Posted September 30, 2014 Share #20 Posted September 30, 2014 Curious indeed as the head of the 11819 (50/2 v4) is not detachable normally and was not sold separately if memory serves. Would you have a link? Just curious. Wasn't sold separately... but I think that is detachable on all 11819s.. at least, my one is such (Canadian 3.022.xxx, head identical to the one from Leicashop - number on side) ; but is just an assembly feature... no accessory you can screw into (and , btw, the curved back element is dangerously protruding when you dismount it...)
