I have both (btw IROOA and 1257J are the same device) but always prefer the modern 12538 (not 358... ), though loving, generally speaking, "old metal"... ... but the 12538 is slimmer, lighter, practical in any sense (also when mounted reversed)

I think I will get one each of all of these hoods ... The more I used the latest modern lenses, I somehow feel the urge to also dig deeper back in time and shoot with these legacy lenses which have consistently delighted me

 

Luigi - where do you get your legacy lenses CLA'ed? My Summarex has some internal fog and the Xenon suffers from a similar fate

I had some lenses maintained by an italian Lab in Milano (Newoldcamera) but just two times in 20 years... Summarex I think is rather "easy" to polish (but surely critical to dissassemble/reassemble), I have the feeling that Xenon is more critical... my one is a bit hazy/foggy but decided not to have it touched...

12585 would be the earlier, metal version of the 12538, it looks much better than the later plastic version, IMO. The IROOA is probably the sexiest hood for the rigid Summicron, but the 12585/12538 are surely more practical (less finder blockage).

12538 is the plastic version indeed. Appeared with the Summicron 50/2 v4 i.e in the beginning of the eighties if memory serves.

I don't think so. After the square SOOFM from 1954, later hoods for Summicron 50/2 were round: IROOA/12571 from 1959 (pic), 12585 (above) from 1963 and the plastic 12538 (above) from 1979. I would ask Luigi to be sure though.

I have one for the Summitar, part SOOFM. (Marked Summitar u. an Sumicron) or SOOPD (Marked Summitar). It is too small to fit on the modern Summicron. (I tried it to be certain.)

I use the 12585 on both my Rigid and V4 Summicrons. The IROOA does look pimp, definitely, but as pointed out the 12585 gives less finder blockage with the cutout in the rim, and it stores quite easily reversed.

 

I had the 12538 at first, but I "upgraded" to the metal hood because it not only looked better, but the plastic hood could flex slightly when you were trying to put it on, bending it slightly but just enough out of shape to make it sometimes a bit of a pain in the butt to attach quickly. That's never a problem with the metal hood.

 

I'd heartily recommend the 12585. The only problem with it is that, over time--assuming you actually carry your gear about with you and use it--you will wear a bit of the paint from the front rim and some of the angled bits, leaving the silver metal showing through. The hood still works great in that condition, though.

The 12538 is home but I can see why you say the metal 12585 may be a better choice for daily use.

 

I like to use my equipment so some wear and tear is fully normal to me

It's easy to see why they left the rectangular hood behind - it was a monster, and very specific to the IIIc-IIIf VF-RF alignment. With the M body it would be hopeless - if impressive.

None except that all 12585H samples have a script for 35/2 lenses while it lacks on most 12585 if i'm not wrong.

He has a clone for the one Leica mentioned above, the 12585 as well. I have one and it,is indistinguishable from the original.

Just drop a bit of acetone on your Heavystar hood and you will see the difference . It is also a screw-in hood, if it is like mine, and not a clip-on hood like the original 12585. Unless it is different to my own sample, the Heavystar is not reversible either. It is much less expensive though.
