APO lens 50mm & 75 mm

Does the 75 minimizes chromatic aberration as well as the 50? Does the 75 produce detail rendition as well 50? etc. What are the differences? Do y'all ( Pease pardon my Texanism) have any experience with both? I understand that the 50 is almost perfect ..... Is the 75 a mere distant 2nd to it?

I've recently purchased the 75 APO. I'm very happy with the results but I know it will take some time to fully appreciate its qualities.

In my short experience shooting Leica I think I can say all of their latest lenses are outstanding.

If you're trying to decide between the two then I think it depends on what you're preferred focal length is.

The 75 APO is one of their best lenses. Performance is outstanding. There is no better short telephoto lens (currently available) for 35mm photography. You would have to be a pixel peeping madman not to be impressed by it. Your question should be more towards what type of focal length you prefer... Standard or short telephoto. 75 is the better choice for portraits etc...

According to the MTF charts, the 50 APO has 10% better contrast on super fine details like hairs. If that matters to you, then get the 50 APO. But the more photography you do the more you will realise how insignificant that is and you should be concerning yourself with other things like focal length, depth of field, and lighting...

This is my concern. The attached image (taken with a noct.f1) exhibited overwhelming chromatic aberration...was worthless in color. I would like to take such an image in color without having to stop down the lens to cut down on chromatic aberration. A 50mm or a 75mm would have done the job as to focal length. Sounds as if they are almost the same as to image quality and chromatic aberration as well.

Sorry about dragging this question out. But, I just loathe 'chromatic aberration' and am thinking about an APO lens.

Shot with M9 and Apo-Summicron-M 75mm f/2 ASPH. @ f/2, ISO 1250. 1/180 s.

" the 50mm Summilux is also APO-corrected" and "the 50 1.4 which is supposedly APO but not in the name"

Where does one get such info? I am relatively new to the Leica world and have never read that before. There are lots I do not know, But admit I am incredulous. Why would Leica keep such information secret?

They really don't.

You can probably find such info in a book or other publication by Erwin Puts, my guess.

David Farkas spoke with Peter Karbe, and reported that Peter said the 50 Summilux ASPH had an APO element despite its not being advertised as APO.

In a similar Shutterbug interview with Karbe, he states that the one element in the 50 Summilux ASPH costs more than all the other glass elements combined.

However, having said that in these old interviews, I believe I've read that the 50 APO Summicron offers even better color correction, although I can't locate the source. This wouldn't be surprising given the advances in technology, and the many years in the evolution of the lens (reportedly over 16 years to come to market).

The fact that both lenses are so small despite the optical quality and level of corrections, is what separates Leica from the competitors (for instance as compared to the Zeiss Distagon as Puts reports here.)

I jave both. All i can say is they are in different leagues.75mm is a great sharp lens corner to corner.50mm is also has this plus a unique abilty which i can describe shortly as clearance, definition and lifelike. If sharpness is number one one your list 75mm will give you that as 50mm but being lifelike belongs to few lenses in the world.

I saw this at Voigtlander 125mm apo, coastal 60mm,zeiss otus and zeiss 135mm f2.Leica has this only at 50mm apo and 24mm elmar f3.8.(this is my opinion of course)

Could you please post an example for the 50mm apo that shows clearance, definition and lifelike? TIA.

I've never shot more than a handful of frames with the new APO 50. I've shot a lot with the 75 though. I've never seen any problems in use against the light like your example, myself.
