I Love My 50mm Dual Range Summicron

Following on the "I love my..." threads in the forums dedicated to M bodies, and after much observation of the numerous curiosities that people have regarding particular Leica lenses and how cumbersome it often is to pique these curiosities, I thought it might be useful to create a thread for specific Leica lenses, with the purpose of the thread to post images that have been taken by the particular lens.

I think that a warehouse of examples of how a particular lens renders on a wide variety of M bodies will be very useful and efficient for those members who (i) are in the market for the particular lens, (ii) wish to compare and contrast the rendering of a lens with other lenses and/or (iii) wish to see what results others are getting from a particular lens.

I have cleared the creation of this thread with Andreas (our forum administrator), who is in support of the endeavor and prepared to relocate these threads into a separate forum if they attain a critical mass (there are a ton of Leica lenses, after all).

If people think this is a bad idea, feel free to chime in and voice your concern.

To be clear - this thread is intended to included photos taken WITH the particular lens, not photos OF the lens

Until I get the hook, I'll kick off with a couple of photos

M9 with Double Range Summicron at close range (actually, screwmount version lens mounted on SOMKY+UOORF). First is cropped, else (as with second) straight from camera.

I've been intrigued by the summicron 50 DR and the associated goggles since I read about them in the recent issue of LFI. I read on ken rockwells site that the goggles don't fit on the digital M bodies or the M6 TTL, is this true? My understanding is that you need to be able to mount the goggles in order to close focus. Is the metering effected at all when close focusing? Any clarification is greatly appreciated.

I just got mine back from DAG. To use it on an M9/240, you need to have the close focus cam machined off. With that you can use it from 1m - infinity. Close focus works but you lose rangefinder coupling so you'd have to use live view or get really good at guessing in the close range. The goggles don't fit, but you wouldn't need them anyway.

I probably committed sacrilege doing this but I'm looking forward to using the lens.

About the lens head options, I know that the rigid Summicron can be unscrewed, disconecting the head from the focus unit, like the old Hektor 135 and Elmar 90. I would like to know if the Summicron F:2,0 "Dual Range" version has the same option.

Exactly the same, same thread, so that, as above noticed by M9Reno, you can use the DR with the SOMKY+UOORF combo on digital Ms (hereunder, on M8)

Ok, I tried but my lens is very, very tight...

Well... I think that many DR Summicrons were NEVER used with the lenshead dismounted... so your lenshead may have rested firm on its mount for 50 years or so...:o... when I dismounted mine for the first time, the chroming of the inner part looked MUCH more shiny than the outer one...

I confess to be quite afraid to take apart and damage the lens.

... hum... I understand your fear... it's all about to have the right tool to grasp the head along its whole diameter and applying the right torque... for this lens, I think that the usage of chemical "facilitators" isn't easy (differently from Elmars 90 / Hektor 135) : the thread of the lenshead is much smaller in diameter, than the barrel... and it is also significantly recessed... a sprayed/injected lubrican hasn't an easy path to follow.. :o

Recently I unscrewed the post affixed to the goggles, which rests on the top plate, so that the goggles would fit on my M6 TTL. Normal focus and close focus works great on my M6 TTL so I thought I would try the DR and goggles on my M-E. Suprisingly close focus does work on the M-E but the DR won't focus to infinity. I'm not going to bother having the DR modified so that it will focus to infinity on the M-E. I bought the DR knowing full well that it may have issues on the M-E, so my intention was always to use it on a film body.

The DR is a great lens, a bit heavy but built like a tank.

Friends, a Happy NewYear and Merry Christmas to all of you. I bought a M8 last week and I am exploring all the possibilities to use all my Leitz lenses. I read that I can not use the Summicron Dualk Range in this camera, but I read also that a member of this forum uses it in a M9. How is the real problem? There is a focus protuding ring that seems to interfer within the camera. Do I have to made some adaptations? Can I use the "glasses"?
