Summicron 50mm and 35mm filter problem

Hi All!

I'm hoping someone can clarify a question that I'm sure many of you will know the answer to--or direct me towards an already existing thread.

I recently purchased a Summicron 50mm lens from KEH as well as a Summicron 35mm, neither of which came with the proper retaining ring. I was told at the Leica store to purchase Series VI 14160 rings, and have done so.

The problem: I would like to use a 62mm filter on these lenses but cannot figure out which initial step up ring will fit into the lenses--39mm, 41mm or 44mm? There is a lot of conflicting information out there about series adapters and so forth, and since I won't have the retaining rings for a couple weeks I would like to be able to confidently purchase step up rings without having to wait and then measure the actual diameter. Thoughts?

Many thank!

Lou

(The 50mm is from 1969, and the 35mm from 1970, I believe)

Sounds like these must be Summicron-R lenses for SLR, not the "normal" rangefinder M models?

Yes it does - if so what versions of these 2 lenses? Use the serial numbers and go here to find out - this also tells you the filter diameters you need to start with

Hi All, and thanks for the responses!

A little clarification: I looked online through the recommended link and believe I have accurately found the lenses I own:

Summicron - R 1:2/35 Leitz Canada, 2693585, 1974, 2cam, Series VII

Summicron - R 1:2/50 Leitz Wetzlar, 2358501, 1969m Series VI

This is a little strange, however, given that I was told at the Leica store in Berlin that my lenses were both Series VI, and that I needed two 14160 retaining rings, so either the store clerk made a mistake or I haven't found the right versions of my lenses--but I think it's probably the latter..

Anyways, so in order to get my 35mm to a normal 58mm filter size I need to purchase a 14161 retaining ring and then use a step up ring from 54-58mm--is this correct, or is the retaining ring unnecessary?

And likewise, will a 39-58mm step up ring work in the 50mm cron? I am hoping to use the lenses on a Canon 5D Mark III, and was previously using a Leitax adapter but have been having issues focusing to infinity and will be trying out Fotodiox adapters next... : (

Thanks again for all the help!

Cheers,

Lou
