Carbon111 Posted May 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Japan Camera Hunter got a few of these lenses in stock recently and I ordered right away, hoping it would be as interesting as the 35mm Perar that I've had for a while. I actually think I like the 28 better. The color and clarity are extraordinary! The only real caveat is the extreme corners are a bit mushy but not bad for a triplet...certainly not like a vintage triplet. MS Optical keeps surprising me - I'm a huge fan of their 50mm f/1.1 Sonnetar! I have a quick little write up with a few test shots here: Carbon111: The MS Optical 28mm Perar f/4 Super-Triplet (If this type of post is considered spam, please delete.)
Advertisement Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Hi Carbon111, Take a look here The MS Optical 28mm Perar f/4 Super-Triplet. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
james.liam Posted May 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2014 Thanks for posting as so little out there about these curiously tiny creations. But do post some more images and impressions. I've been less interested in the 28 as my Ricoh GR had taken up that role most adeptly. The 35 appealed to me more, but is now canceled because a downstream supplier went out of business.

As soon as I've had more time with the 28mm I will post some more considered photos. I found a 35mm Perar on eBay a while ago and posted a short blurb here: Carbon111: The MS Optical Perar 35mm f/3.5 Super Triplet MK II I have the 50mm f/1.1 Sonnetar and will post something about it soon. I really love that lens!
stephen.w Posted May 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2014 If you don't mind my asking, what did the 28 and 35 lenses go for?
Carbon111 Posted May 16, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted May 16, 2014 If you don't mind my asking, what did the 28 and 35 lenses go for? The 28mm was US $637 with free shipping from Japan. I got it through Japan Camera Hunter. (linked on my blog) The 35mm I got for a lowball bid on eBay a long time ago but don't remember exactly...

I'm particularly interested in the 28mm lens, with its minimal profile.

Carbon111 Posted May 16, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted May 16, 2014 The biggest surprise is that the green/red edge color shift you get with most uncoded wides is minimal with this lens - at least on the M 240 (haven't tried it on the M9 yet). I didn't have to correct for it at all. I've only had the lens a couple of days. I'll put it through its proper paces this weekend and get some more critical shots - not of my cats or backyard. Thanks for the infos ! It would be great to see some tests with the M9 , I've been restraining myself from buying it due to the mushy corners mentioned a few times before but size matters ! CrisRose Posted May 17, 2014 Share #10 Posted May 17, 2014 Is there no opportunity to code it at all?
Ecar Posted May 18, 2014 Share #11 Posted May 18, 2014 I have found that coding these lenses is a bit hit-and-miss, probably due to the material/color of the mount. The code sensor on the M9 is more forgiving, but in my experience it's nearly impossible to make it work consistently on the M240. I have only tried DYI coding, though. Perhaps a skilled craftsman could mill the mount properly and make it work? I decided I would resort to code selection via the menu.
Carbon111 Posted May 19, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted May 19, 2014 Is there no opportunity to code it at all? There is a little notched out area where the code can go on the mount. I thought images were fine without fiddling any further. Took a few images on the M9-P today with this lens but haven't had a chance to upload them yet so I can't say if they're any different than the M 240 images. I'll post more info here once I get a moment...
ldhrads Posted August 28, 2014 Share #13 Posted August 28, 2014 I shot a bit with this little lens last weekend. I was preoccupied and didn't manually code it on the M9-p. I haven't even had time to do much than preview the images, but they look clean albeit a little vignetted. Anyone manually coding this in the menu? I think I'll code it as a WATE 28/4 and see if that works. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I doubt there's much correction in the MATE profile in any event. I think coding the Perar 28 will take some experimentation. I've never bothered with the Perar 35. ldhrads Posted September 3, 2014 Share #15 Posted September 3, 2014 Just looking at imported shots taken with the 28/4 perar, both on M9-P and MM. On the MM, I had coded as 28/4 MATE, but had taken the M9 shots uncoded since I just put it on and forgot it! I'm a bit disappointed, to tell the truth. I like the 35 perar, I'm shooting this one with the lens hood on and there's clearly some vignetting. Not sure if its the hood or the lens. I shot it mostly open, but did stop it down to f8 on some of the bright days. What bothers me the most is that there appears to be central underexposure with peripheral vignetting. Detail is lacking centrally. Here are some shots that were uploaded to LR5 and not messed with! Welcome, dear visitor!
