I recently got a (old)Elmar 50mm 2.8. However, the front element is heavily damaged. I suppose it needs to be replaced. Any ideas about how much it gonna cost? Can any suggest where I can send it to?

Thanks in advance for your help:)

It may be cheaper to buy another, but damage may only mean the lens loses some contrast and 'glows' a bit more than usual, it rarely means the lens is less sharp. As to where to send it, it depends where you are in the world.

If it's an old lens, a CLA will cost rather more than you probably paid for it. Last CLA I had done was for a pre ASPH 50mm Summilux and that was something like €350.

If the front lens element is badly damaged, they are not going to be able to replace it - even if the part is available, it would make little sense economically to do so.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I have an Elmar 50 (39xx serial) which is getting a bit dry and wobbly. Focus is perfect though.

Can someone recommend a workshop in europe which performs CLA on this lens?

No 6bit required. I know I can always send it to leica but the last two lenses I sent there ended up at about 600 euros (!) so for this one I am looking for a slightly less expensive option.

About two years ago Malcolm Taylor in the UK gave my f/2.8 Elmar an internal clean, tighten up, and lube for £75, but it was bundled in with a full CLA on an M2 so I don't know if that affected the price. Obviously the lens came back like new.

For something old and damaged a specialist makes more sense Malcolm is very good, but can be very slow at times.

At the end of February I gave Malcolm a Hektor 125 with heavily marked front element, which he replaced with equivalent clean glass he happened to have in stock. The lens looks and works like new. His turn-around speeds are variable, depending on what you want. In this case it took him less than one month.

You could also send it to Will van Manen. He's competent, friendly and his turnaround time is relatively quick. For complex optical repairs (eg, polishing and recoating a front element), I have also sent lenses to Peter Grisaffi at CRR Luton in the past, with excellent results (but I had to wait several months for the lenses to be returned to me...).
