I am traveling over to US in middle of May and going to stay in NYC/Manhattan couple of days for holidays. As Manhattan is quite a special and I have never been there before, I would need some advice. What lens kit you would recommend ( max. 3 lenses ). I have following lenses available :

21SEM

28cron

35lux

50lux

75cron

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Depends what you like to shoot but I personally go with 18-35 focal lengths in Manhattan. Even for people the wider perspective just suits the environment, the pace and the lifestyle. Everything happens so fast so the less time to focus the better. I mostly always have a 50 on me too, don't use it much but when I do I'm glad to have it.

Everything is close, upfront, tall but wide. Even hotel rooms are relatively much smaller than other countries.

Personally I don't use a tele sort of perspective much in these situations, only you will know if you like it.

Personally, out of your collection, I would go for 21, 35, 50. If you can carry an extra go for the 28 too, but probably overkill. If you want a 2 lens kit I think you will find 21 and 35 cover everything, even better on two bodies.

35 and 75 or 50 alone.

All the lenses will have some use, however you do not want to become a pack animal. People who use slrs will go for zooms. Their problem is they zoom instead of moving around and only get the pics from the easy vantage point.

The 50 Lux is a beautiful lens and you will have something to explore nightlife. I got my 75 because it is a similar optical construction. Problem is focus difficulty and I am going to explore the 1.4. magnifier. There is something different with the digital M viewfinders compared too even .72 film cameras and focus takes me way too long. With film cameras, time was 1/2 sec. Digital M is more like 3 to 5 sec. Perhaps it is just .68 instead of .72. It is not the short throw of focus or a vision problem.

I'd recommend taking your best focal lengths. I personally love the 35mm so my kit is organised around that. Based on your available lenses I would take the 21, 35 and 50 like I always do. If you love the 28 then the 28/50 will make a solid combo.

I spent a month in Berlin and had the 21SEM, 35LUX and 75Cron. I used the 21+35 the most. the 75 was useful in some situations. I Prefer to have one lens on the camera and an other in my jacket pocket to avoid carrying a bag. I did bring a bag and all three lenses on a few excursions but in retrospect I dont think I used all three in one day. I think, if you have planned what you are going to see, you can choose between a 21+35 set or a 35+75 set. It took me some time to be confident enough to just bring two lenses because I was afraid I would miss pictures.

One lens 35FLE. I used that almost exclusively for 8 days and during a Turnley workshop.

The other lenses I used were the 28 and 50 also, but for 5% of shots at most for each of these lenses.

Because of the diversity of NYC, you might find yourself taking more street/people photos than you ever imagined prior to arrival.

Interesting. I avoid the 35 Cron Asph on digital because of the focus shift at f/4 and 5.6, and I avoid the 35 Lux Asph FLE because of the terrible bokeh posted compared to the previous version. In part, that's what drove me to the 28 Cron Asph and 50 Lux Asph. Two of Leica's very best lenses.

Was just there this weekend. I used the Voigt 15mm and 35 cron during day/ 35 lux and 24 lux most at night and never used 50 or 90 at all (M240). There is little room to stand back for a picture there with so many people, so wide is best. Consider getting the 15mm - it is cheap and makes great pics with Cornerfix.
