jdsheepdog Posted March 31, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 31, 2014 Everyone will have a different reason, and will make a choice for different reasons. In that you are looking for "a" lens, instead of a multiplicity of lenses, I presume that you are not using the camera commercially. That at least you and I have enough commonality to justify my offering an opinion. My choice would be the 35 mm, assuming you mean the f 1.4 aspherical. At 24 mP resolution, you will be able to crop your way at least to 90 mm equivalence in most cases, and will be more versatile probably than the otherwise excellent 50 mm. Unless of course you take a lot of portraits, then a different choice could be better. The lens that lives on my M 240 is the wonderful little 28 mm Elmarit, and it comes off only uncommonly.
MarkP Posted March 31, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 31, 2014 They are both excellent lenses. Look back through old photographs from your previous cameras and lenses. The focal length you use most and see the world through is the first one to get. Don't lose too much sleep over the decision as you will eventually end up with both of them.

Herr Barnack Posted April 1, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 1, 2014 If I could have only one lens, it would be either a 28mm or a 35mm focal length. The 50mm is a nice forcal length too, but if you shoot with a 28 or 35 for a while, the 50 starts to seem like a short telephoto. I have discovered that the combination of a 28 and a 50 cover the vast majority of subject matter - for me, that is. YMMV,
thighslapper Posted April 1, 2014 Share #7 Posted April 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Toss a coin. Whatever you get you won't be disappointed and can do 90% of what you want with either. You will end up getting the other one sometime anyway .....

Jeff S Posted April 1, 2014 Share #10 Posted April 1, 2014 Unless you really need the speed/wide aperture, then the 35 Summicron and Summarit are both fantastic lenses. I have the 35 Summicron Asph and the 50 Summilux Asph, and find no need to trade or or supplement the 35. YMMV. Lots of other choices, too, if you can try any out before purchase.
