What should I pay for a 50mm rigid Summicron?

Hi everyone - good afternoon.

I'm currently 'watching' a 50mm (rigid) f2 'Summicron' on Ebay, which probably dates to around 1962/3/4.

There's still a few hours to run in the auction, so the price will obviously increase, but at the moment it's just over £300.

Cosmetically it's okay; the seller reports no nasties with the glass.

Would anyone care to put a valuation on this model for me?

Many thanks.

Peter

No - the forum does not do valuations.

Check similar items on eBay and run through reputed dealers' websites to find a reasonable price. Which will be different for each individual anyway.

Hello jaapv

If you had written in bold blue as admin, I would have accepted a given forum rule - but as this is not the case, I would highly appreciate if you could explain why you think that the forum does not do valuations.

After all, somebody asked a question - why should there be no answer?

thanks!

all the best

I think it is quite easy to read the rules of this Forum:

"Private sale of Leica products

This forum contains a buy & sell area: Leica Forum Classifieds. No buy & sell activities, linking to third party selling sites (e.g. link to eBay and similar areas) are allowed.

This also includes any form of negotiations, price/pricing discussions or for sale information."

Someone asks:

"I'm currently 'watching' a 50mm (rigid) f2 'Summicron' on Ebay, which probably dates to around 1962/3/4.

How does this fit into the rules quoted above?

If anyone doesn't bother much about this passage of the rules and thinks that the questione might be answered nevertheless, he can give an answer: someone who is also interested in the item which is on auction might tell a rather low price, someone who is interested in selling items like this might give a high one.

Writing as an ordinary member I can say I have read Jaap's original reply several times and find it to be both concise and instructive wrt to the original poster. How he could possibly be offended by the precise information offered leaves me astounded. I find nothing impolite in Jaap's comments but I do find the indignation of the OP to be somewhat ridiculous. That's about as politely as I can put it.

+1, what could possibly cause offence?

As we all (should) know, s/h Leica equipment can vary in price enormously, depending on many factors not just condition, so to give an estimated value on any item without inspecting it is pretty useless.

There are enough dealer websites and other resources where one can find similar items, compare product photos and descriptions to make an informed opinion of a given item, with the caveat that what one person might describle as 'mint' would only be considered 'good' by another.

I would assume one could ask "if you have any thoughts on what this might be worth, please PM me." This would keep it off the forum.

Oh and I found nothing rude about jaap's response.

Actually it wouldn't keep it off the forum because the question would still be there, just not the responses. Posts like the OP clutter up the forums with questions that shouldn't be here per the forum rules, as stated. No one wants countless posts such as these on the forums.

Personally I don't think Peter is a troll but a new member (do trolls fill out their profiles? Perhaps they do).

Anyway, trying to get the thread back on the right keel - fwiw, in my comparably brief experience with Leica, having put together my M and LTM kit over the last three years, I have found that it is better to buy equipment from reputable dealers than off eBay, as tempting as the latter may be. One can certainly be lucky on eBay but I find that I sleep better if I have the benefit of a dealer warranty and the option to return an item if it turns out to be faulty. After all, dealers put their names on the line when they sell secondhand equipment.

Since prices do vary quite a bit, esp. for the more "ordinary" old stuff (most rigid Summicron 50s would fall in that category) one has to look around to see which dealers have reasonable pricing and which add that extra 10-20% (or more sometimes). There are several good ones in Europe, site sponsor Red Dot included which I have bought from several times and always been very happy (though I'd very much like to see an online payment system added to their site). Leicashop is another and there are several good Italian ones, too.

Speaking of auctions though. There are a few photographica auctions where interesting items are usually offered, Westlicht run by Leicashop is one and LP-Foto in Stockholm another. Westlicht usually has some incredible items on sale, but also more ordinary things, and are fascinating to follow.

LP-Foto is much smaller and often offers items in need of service, but the prices are usually lower which means that it can be worth it to buy from them and then factor in the price of a service at a good service point (there are several, here's a list). LP-Foto's next auction is on 6 April and Westlicht is on 25 May.

Cheers

Philip

I think that a polite and rule-consistent answer is : "Summicron 50 was made in so many versions, and can be in so disparate conditions of use that a serious evaluation can't be anyway made" :o

I always prefer to LOOK AT an HANDLE an item I'd like to buy : exceptions are 3-4 widely reknown specialized dealers that are really very trustable in the specifications they declare.

(Hopefully this post stays within bounds. If not, please delete it.)

A website I have found useful for insurance purposes is collectiblend.com. They pull data from auction sites, as a previous poster recommended, and generate some statistical averages, along with the specific input data as well. Enjoy.
