I don't work in Marketing, but I wonder if the image of a razor blade conveys the wrong message to the subconscious mind (ie., that of danger or "stay away", rather than the desired "images from me are incredibly sharp and clear!").

An example of an ad that conveys much more meaning with no words:
Financial Times, Aug 3 edition, "how to spend it" mag, page 15 I'd post an image of the ad but I can't find anything on the Internet (yet). Bang & Olufsen did a great job here. I think they don't even need the text on the adjoining page 14. Peter |

Reminds me of an Andre Rieu concert...or an Andre Rieu concert makes me think of razorblades. Theres an uncomfortable connection there somewhere...Andre Rieu, razor blades, M8

Don't these ads that you people seem to find so objectionable help support this forum that many of us visit almost daily?
I'll live with the ads personally. I even like em! the way I see it, If you hate ads so much.. start BBS and a chat room to talk about your cameras in a nice, safe, ad free environment. Just a thought. I'm probably missing some important point though.. Wouldn't be the first time ![]() |

I dont think anyone takes the Leica adverts or their dislike for them all that seriously. Its just a grumpy old man thread to whinge in when the connection gets slow and the site becaomes a very ordinary experience . |

As stated in the original message I posted my intent was to raise for discussion the professionalism as well as the realism of the banner advertisements. It seems to have been hi-jacked to become a thread about browser performance (which is a non-issue in my humble technical opinion). Given that we all support Leica and want to see the company prosper it is obvious to me (and to some other posters) that they need some serious marketing support, which they do not appear to be getting. I would doubt that these advertisements would not appeal to a serious prospective buyer. Perhaps in addition to the M-campaign photographs Leica should solicit ideas from owners which could be channeled into sensible marketing? LouisB

Circling back on my earlier post about the Bang & Olufsen ad... Try going to FT.com / How to Spend it - digital edition and look at pages 14-15 of the August, 2008 edition. This ad conveys meaning to the subconscious mind without the need for additional words. If you can't see the ad, it is a full-page ad of a very ripe banana. The end of the banana appears to be viewed through a Bang & Olufsen television, and for that part of the banana it is "typical" yellow rather than yellow with ripe spots. To biglouis' point, I think this was about the quality of the message from Leica to market their product (rather than banner ads on this website).

The garrulous, ridiculously pugilistic and cut-throatly violent banners are the perfect illustration that Leica Solms is misguided and has lost its way.
They haven't a concept anymore. They are talking to the wrong people. (They fired Lee - excellent! - but they're not following up on that. The Summarits live on, an eternal embarassment. Leica marries Michelin (or perhaps Pirelli)). Nor, by the way, are they in the least bit interested in what posters on this "L Camera Forum" (and not "Leica Camera Forum") write. To the contrary. They couldn't give a *beep*, and it shows. The reaction is exacerbated by the fact that there are egos "here" (is this a 'place'?) that nurture a kind of self-deception to the effect that they are somehow a part of evolving Solms policy, that they contribute to its shaping. Well, they're not. And the attempt to give that impression through threads of the kind: 'I've been hobnobbing with the right people at Solms and I know what's on the designing table for Photokina 200x, 200y and 200z' is, quite frankly, pathetic. I'm not in the least surprised that this "place" is NOT called 'The Leica Camera Forum'. Somebody is wise in Solms...

@leica_mage, I do not see anything particularly wrong with the advertisements. What are you on about?
The banners catch attention & the underlying blurb is nicely presented in a recognisable style. They actually use 'real' pics from 'real' users to adveritise their stuff. If I didn't already have a M8 I would consider buying one. |
