laptoprob Posted November 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) As I stated in another thread, my beloved D2 failed yesterday. Only vertical stripes: sensor died. Appearantly Leica is replacing them under warranty because the Sony sensors fail. I read somewhere that only some batches have this annoying problem. I can't find out any more. So here I go: mine is serial 2990xxx. What's yours? Or is yours still OK? If so, what's the serial?
Advertisement Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Hi laptoprob, Take a look here Digilux 2 serial numbers and sensor failure. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rebride Posted November 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 27, 2007 Mine is 298****. It died in July this year, was sent to Solms, successfuly repaired (for free), works fine now. Dejan
jbstitt Posted November 27, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 27, 2007 Mine is 2986***. Do three points make a trend or define a population? Not yet.
lkfosterl Posted November 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 27, 2007 29892xx. Had it in the first time for a failed sensor. It took around 3 months if I recall. Sent it back in for a smeared area on high detail shots and decided to take the upgrade offer for a D3. While it's bigger than the D2, the raw buffer makes it worth the added size. That, and noticably less distortion.
ajthornbury Posted November 27, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 27, 2007 Hi the sensor went on my D2 in June this year, pink whites followed by complete failure.Sent back to Solms via Milton Keynes. Took approx 6 weeks, didn't take up the D3 offer. serial No 2987xxx
rliamo Posted November 27, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 27, 2007 The # 298 seems to be common to all the D2's that have gone pear-shaped in this thread.Mine's 3014*** and was bought new in Feb.'06 and I'm guessing it was one of the last of 'em.So far no heart stopping pictures have graced it's display and I hope the dreaded sensor failure 'aint gonna be the first.....Liam

Scott Packard Posted November 28, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 28, 2007 My serial number is 79942918xxxx, bought Feb '04, sent in Sep '07 to NJ. Still waiting - maybe by end of January, and no D3 offer.
laptoprob Posted November 28, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted November 28, 2007 My serial number is 79942918xxxx, bought Feb '04, sent in Sep '07 to NJ. Still waiting - maybe by end of January, and no D3 offer. Hey Scott, are you sure about that serial number? Very different and much longer than the others. Could it be like 7994 plus 2918xxx? That would make sense considering the other numbers. Yours being one of the first would imply that production may have started at 2.900.000. Highest numbers being 3.110.xxx. About 200.000 cameras made? Thank you all! cheers, Rob.
elansprint72 Posted November 28, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 28, 2007 2999..... bought November 04, still working, guess it's only a matter of time?
mjh Posted November 28, 2007 Share #14 Posted November 28, 2007 After Sony had made that fateful change to the sensor manufacturing process, they did crank out lots of CCDs before they noticed there was something wrong. I don’t think it is safe to assume that any Digilux 2 might be exempt. However, the time it takes for an affected sensor to fail will vary; it depends on environment factors such as humidity. It’s quite possible that the sensor will work flawlessly within the whole of the useful lifetime of a camera (but might fail immediately after you’ve sold the camera). laptoprob Posted November 28, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted November 28, 2007 here is more info about the failing sensors. A production error or change caused it all. Appearantly during 2004 the problem was solved. So later production cameras should not have the problem. Are those the 3.***.*** models? Maarten Posted November 28, 2007 Share #20 Posted November 28, 2007 The sensor of my Digilux 2 failed right at the moment I wanted to sell the camera! I felt quite embaressed as you can imagine with my no 2994xxx! It has been sent back to Solms a couple of weeks ago and I haven't heard anything yet.
