Yosemite camera raw does not support RWL in preview

I shoot RWL raw with my D-lux 109.

But the RWL files cannot be viewed in my iMac running Yosemite.

I can see the images in both Lightroom and Photoshop and work with these files, no problems.

But neither Preview or iPhotos can read the RWL format.

This is bad because in Finder, the file size shows OK, yet dimension shows only 0 X 0. Therefore I cannot check them in finder.

 

Is this just me? Or is this because Yosemite camera raw does not support Leica RWL format?

 

Please help.

Would conversion into .dng be an option? This even saves space.

Mac OSX provides RAW support at the operating system level. This means that Preview, iPhoto and Aperture all use the Digital Camera RAW (DCR) component to process RAW files. The current version of DCR does not support the D-Lux Typ 109. I expect that it will do so after some time

 

Until then, I process the RWL files from the camera using the free Adobe DNG Converter to transform them into DNG files which Aperture, et al, can process. The drawback of this is that the distortion correction specified by the camera is not applied. I think this will resolve itself once Apple updates DCR.

Thank you for the very quick and favourable reply.

Converting them to DNG will work.

But since LR can read the images, there is no real pressure to take the extra step.

What I don't quite understand is, who's responsibility is it to ensure consumers can buy a Leica camera, take pictures, and view them immediately on their OS X systems.

Is that Apple's job?

Or is that Leica's responsibility?

(I no longer have a PC computer so I don't know how things work over there)

If logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end, then, these two giants should be friends, meaning, as soon as Leica (Panasonic) comes up with a proprietary RAW format, they want to call Apple and make sure this is included in the next Apple DCR update while Apple would call them and congratulate Leica to congratulate them on their new release.

I understand the importance of proprietary RAW. It contains information that DNG may not contain.

But I really hope that the whole photo industry should get together to come up with a universal RAW format that is easy to support, not just today, but may be 50 or 100 years later.

Yes, but a rather obscure DNG format that Apple did not implement originally.

Actually, DNG is the universal raw format, or at least intended to be.

Good news - Apple have today, 5th March, updated Digital Camera Raw to 6.03.

 

The following Leica models are now supported in their native RAW format:

 

D-Lux (Typ 109)

V-Lux (Typ 114)

X (Typ 113)

X Vario (Typ 107)

 

This means that Mac OS X Yosemite, and hence Aperture and iPhoto, as well as the upcoming Photos, can now work with the RAW files.

I just purchased a Leica Vario and upgraded the operating system to the latest firmware, 1.1. I run iPhoto on my older iMac desktop and Photos on my MacAir. Neither will show my RAW photos. I can open them on Photoshop or Bridge, but I would like to review the photos in RAW on the laptop in particular when I trace without Photoshopl. From the earlier posts I gathered that I should be able to view the RAW files on both computers. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be very much appreciated.
