Still can't choose between dl109 and vl114, any suggestion is welcomed!

Hey all, so I know this might not be a completely suitable comparison to make, but I really have problems choosing between dl109 and vl 114. I know the choice should be made depending on my needs, but both just look amazing, also from all the reviews.

The size of the camera and the price between the two are not an issue for me. I intend to use the camera mainly for traveling- so street shooting, landscape more. IQ is definitely important, especially when shooting in low light/fast.

I somewhat favor the vl114 as so far I am concerned- large sensor, higher resolution, so the IQ is better (?), big zoom range etc. I do have personally checked leica store, 114 is bigger than I thought and somehow doesn't feel that quality-oriented (maybe i got the wrong impression).

I do have a relatively good compact, but if dl 109 is really a nice choice, I don't mind the upgrade.

Any suggestion is welcomed. Big thanks:)

Welcome to the forum :). I have no experience with the VL114 sorry but the DL109's sensor is larger (180 vs 130mm2 more or less) with less pixels (12 vs 20MP) and its lens is faster (f/1.7 vs f/2.8 at wide FL) with much less reach (75mm vs 400mm equiv. FL) so they are not the same beasts at all.

haha thanks, finally joined a forum after many years of shooting and first post yay!

I know they probably shouldn't even be compared. Just a matter of choice after all but i guess i haven't got a clear preference as the differences between the two are not super significant to me. I do also like DL109 a lot when I was trying it out in the store last time.

Well, I will go there in like 3 hours and now am curious what's my final pick today:)

Welcome to the forum! Unless you really need the longer reach of the V-Lux lens, for travel I am sure you would use the smaller faster camera rather more and get excellent travel pictures. If wildlife or ground to air photography feature prominently in your interests, go for the D-Lux.

True! I probably wont be in constant use of the 400mm lens anyway and DL109 should make my traveling life easier while taking decent pics. Still remember the guy in the store comparing DOF and highly recommend DL109 over VL114. haha.

You are talking about quality orientation in the Vlux. You mean the camera, or the final print? I bought the Vlux1 for a safari and you'll be amazed of the print quality at 50*70cm. The 114 is so much better!

I also own the Dlux4 which is a beauty too, but I just can't get accustomed to the pointandshoot way of photography with a screen. I prefer a viewfinder and more body

I use my D-Lux 109 for some professional jobs as complement to Leica M9/M, as it renders colours much like the M's. In low light conditions it even beat my M and makes a perfect combo. I can give my recommendations!

I have been using a V-Lux1 for many years with stunning results, and I know the 114 is even better. Mine has been all over the world and that flexible lens has been so valuable. It is quite a bulky camera, however, so I have decided that I need something which allows a bit more spontaneity so am looking at a smaller additional camera which is rather more portable. While the D(109) is a super camera (and my preference) because of the EVF it might just be too big for my pocket.

Like you, I am still deciding and might even go for a C although that is much less specialised but much more portable.

I have them both.

The DLux is great for travel, compact, etc.

The VLux replaces a DSLR and an array of lenses for me.

Get both!

hahaha, what a good suggestion! Unfortunately I couldn't really afford both at the moment or at least prefer to have one first and get used to it ;)

Not really the print quality as I mainly use my pics online. But I do heard the print quality is indeed good for 114! but viewfinder also for DL109 ;)

Welcome to the Forum.

Have a look at our site (www.barbara-and-stu.com). The only camera I've used since December is my new V-Lux 114 -- My other 6 cameras have been just sitting unused. I find it an ideal travel camera since it covers just about any situation I can throw at it. Our most recent trip, Nicaragua, involved landscape, city, street and wildlife photography, and as you'll see in our three Nicaragua photo galleries it performed admirably. When I first handled it I feared it was too big, but I lost that impression within a couple of hours and now carry it with me almost everywhere, which includes daily street photography in NY.

For me it's the right camera. Perhaps it is for you, too.

I've read many reviews and this is definitely the best so far! Thanks for such detailed info and amazing pics and bravo for its great low light performance. I didn't make it yesterday to the shop, but seems that i got a preference there:) haha

Exactly the feeling I had last time trying Vlux as it's much bigger than I thought. But as you and others have commented, it does deliver high quality images and can be quite handy to use in any situation.

So you might opt for C over Dl109 only for the size? The latter is quite portable already isn't it.

Thanks for the sweet reply and nice pics on your website! but too bad I could only see the smaller version as it reads "error" once I tried to click it and make it bigger.

I seriously need to visit the shop this coming week myself as all of you here gave me positive feedback regarding both cameras. :)

Ellz90, I am waiting for my retailer to have both C & D in stock so I can compare size. Reports on this forum indicate that D109 is not really "pocketable" so like the price, I suppose it is all down to the size of your pocket. The C does produce some stunning shots for its size so must be considered for me but the D specification and much larger sensor are most attractive. The Fuji X100T is about the same size as the D109 and has an APS-C sensor but no zoom.

Nothing like a hands-on evaluation to decide.

Take a look at the "which Leica Compact" thread under Other Leica Products a few headings down this page.
