Leica D-Lux Typ 109 - It's about the images

There has been a lot of talk about it versus the Panasonic LX100, as well as discussion about QC issues and Japan vs China. However, at the end of the day, it's a camera to be used to create images. In that spirit, I'm including a number of photos I took a few days ago with the camera.

I was in Philadelphia for part of the day, and visiting Longwood Gardens another part of the day. I brought along my Typ 109, along with my Nikon Df. The garden was packed with people, and downtown Philly was also very busy, so these are all images that were taken very quickly. Thankfully, the Typ 109 focus was quick and accurate. And the image quality was very good, better than I expected. I also liked the fact that I was able to share images, transferred from my camera to me phone, to friends on Facebook, without the need for a computer, right from location.

The images here are from the camera's JPG engine. The only edits I did on the computer were re-sizing for the web. I attached smaller, lower-quality versions of each image to this thread (to keep to the forum rules), but I posted larger, higher quality images (1600 pixel wide) in my Flickr album dedicated to the Typ 109. That album contains some other images made with the Typ 109, and will be added to over time:

Bottom line for me: I think it's a great little camera! It may not be perfect, but I don't see it being a limiting factor for anyone wanting a compact camera to take with them.

Feudal1:

Do your photos were taken in RAW or JPG straight from the camera ... ?

In case of being RAW.

What the program has been edited?

Thanks

JPG straight from camera. I forgot to change the settings to shot RAW+JPG. :)

Chris. Thank you so much for posting these images. I have decided to invest in a Type 109 during the coming weeks but just need to sell my V-Lux1 first to help towards funding.

The images you have posted are so helpful because they match pretty closely the sort of subjects I shoot, particularly the close florals (growing orchids is my main hobby).

The street scene at the top is particularly impressive too.

I must contain my excitement until I take the plunge.

What settings for the lovely dusk shot?

Same in 4K vid?

It looks noise free. Nice.

Settings for the duck shot were f/2, 1/60, ISO 1250 (had auto ISO enabled), and -1 exposure compensation.

I haven't shot any video with it yet, but am hoping to get an opportunity to do so very soon. The Typ 109 is a great little companion to go with my Nikon Df. And in the streets of downtown Philadelphia, I favored the 109 over my Df for portability and to be more discreet.

I think you'll enjoy the camera. It's fun to shoot, and the IQ is really very good for such a small body. Good luck on selling your V-Lux 1 to purchase the 109.

I have attached a few more shots taken during the holidays with the Typ 109.

I want to add - I also have a Sony RX100M3, which in various places on the Web, is treated as a competitor. However, I don't really feel this is the case. The 109 is not a pocket camera unless you are wearing a coat. The RX100 is. The RX100 is 20mp compared to the 12mp Typ 109. So theoretically, in ideal lighting conditions, the RX100 should be able to capture more detail. However, in conditions where lighting is not great, like indoors or in the evening, the 109 does a much better job in capturing detail and not losing it to noise like the RX100. Also being able to switch formats (16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 1:1) in camera, while still using the full sensor, is pretty useful. So, I think the Typ 109 holds a pretty unique spot in the compact camera arena. Compact camera, with a zoom and a relatively large sensor, in a very solid build.
