Ramblings: Why I bought the D-Lux 6 100 years

Why I bought a Leica D-Lux 6 100 years

1) I have the Olympus E510 when the 4/3 system first came about. Then the Panasonic GF1 when the micro 4/3 system came about. However, still not small enough to always be with me thus not many pictures and underutilized systems... or am just lazy.

2) I never been a good photographer with all the slr- too many settings to think about, might just end up shooting auto! And maybe even jpeg only! Not to mention no post editing!

3) So that would mean I am looking at compacts. Fixed or with a zoom. If it is going to be my one and only camera, a zoom would be beneficial... plus I would not need to invest in system lenses.

4) Which brought me to Leica... ah the myth of Leica in photography! Compact range of D-lux, C series, Vario and E2. Vario is a little large and E2 without zoom. thus the D-lux and C series. I used to have the panasonic lx3 and thus lean more towards the D-lux.

5) Though the D-Lux 6 is "the same" as lx7, why i went with the D-Lux 6 in the end? Yes, it has the Leica red dot. the 100 year series came with a very nice leather sling pouch and neck/wrist pouch. The myth of it, is just like a fairy tale wedding, with your perfect person. So i CHOOSE to believe, yes they are more stringent in choosing their parts, more stingy error margins(thus the higher cost) and it is a Leica firmware which produces different jpegs. Yes it is also 2 years ago that they launch it with a new D-Lux 7 coming... BUT i have the 100 years logo on the camera... one and only time the model will have it! hahaha...

6) So in the end, if you're not a good photographer with a compact, at least you'll look good!... and yes I bought the EVF3 as well...

All in all, if you feel good and comfortable with the camera, you might take it around with you and take more pictures eventually... and the quality with the passion(read believe) might be better...

... then again, it could just be my mind justifying splurging for my birthday!

Cheers and have a good week everyone!

Reading through your post, I guess there are 2 things that come true and the rest could be ignored (not a personal attack, but rather observation).

1)Ccompact seems a good choice for you. You bought a compact, excellent choice.

2) It was your birthday - who cares about more justifications? It was a very nice & stylish bday present and that's all there is to it. Now enjoy!

Oh and happy birthday!

Re. Point 5, the camera is made by Panasonic. There is no 'selection' of parts. They are technically identical. Firmware IS different as the Leica version has to show the Leica branding.

Enjoy your camera, the PanaLeicas are nice compacts, but please stop trying to perpetuate silly internet myths!

Why do you need a justification? It`s decent and capable Panasonic camera lipsticked with a Leica logo and some marketing myths build around it. The most important thing is that you enjoy it whenever you pick it up.

Congrats on your purchase! I hope it is working out for you. I recently purchased the G-Star Raw edition of the D-Lux 6. I was reticent at first, since I'm not the type who collects special edition cameras; I prefer to use my cameras out in the world. But, like you, there were a couple of added extras in the package that appealed to me: the camera case being a key addition. While I could have purchased the Panasonic variant, and saved me some money in the process, for me it also comes down to design and I've never liked the hand grip of the Panasonic. Finally, I got a good deal on the G-Star edition, so I went with that. So far so good, I've taken it to Mexico City and it's currently traveling with me (and my M9) here in Turkey. Next week I'm off to Spain, and after that, Ecuador.

It's funny, I find those who bash the D-Lux/C-Lux/V-Lux/C cameras as faux Leicas or somehow not worthy of the name to be as silly as those who claim that these cameras really do offer a different IQ. They're Leica's, that's it. The difference between them and their Panasonic variants is aesthetic, and it's ok to choose based on design.

In any case, congrats again!

I'm just waiting for Bad Bob to chip in !! There have been some fantastic images posted on this forum from D-Lux cameras covering a wide range of topics and scenarios. Your camera is very capable, as ever it's the unreliable squidgy thing stood behind it that's important. The ones that spring to mind immediately are some by"louis2" although not wishing to discount others.

Spot on. If it says Leica on the tin, then it's a Leica. I think the choice of deciding which product is a Leica and which is not belong to Leica "itself".

Used to have a DL4 and at the time it was a fantastic small camera. Based on that experience I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Leica compact if I were on the market for a small camera.

Agreed! And as for what comes to "Louis2", he's in a league of his own with these small compacts.. been a fan of his photos for quite a long time.

I own a DL4 (Panny knock-off) and an X1 and XV. The DL4, like all the Panny knock offs, at least have a competent AF system; unlike the X1/X2/XV. And BTW, my DL4 still can produce good photos. I wish all the AF Leicas used Panny AF systems.

I have both a Leica DLUX5 and a Panasonic LX7. Not exactly a direct comparison as the former has a CCD sensor and the latter a CMOS. I prefer the colors of the Leica - warmer and somewhat richer. The LX7 colors seem to be somewhat pale, although can be adjusted in PP. I found the same thing with my Nikon DLSR's - the CCD sensors seemed to "pop" a little more straight from the camera compared to the later CMOS sensors.

Lots of rumors of a Panasonic LX8. This time, if there is a Leica version, I will get it. While all the parts are probably the same, I think there may be a difference in color rendering between the two. The less I have to do in PP, the better.

For crying out loud.. we're talking about compacts here. It has nothing to do with ccd vs. cmos, with compaxt the setting are changed from left to right and vice versa with every version they push out. The color is how they decided to tweak the firmware this time.

And usually change from ccd to cmos is done just to lover the cost or to ink out better video more easily..

Let's not get into this dead-horse-beating game in the compacts as well.. it's been all discussed with M9 vs. M240 with enough irrational statements already.

And what comes to panny vs Leica in D-lux the differences are cosmetics, Leica logo in firmware, better warranty and lightroom. That's all there is to it: no better quality control, no better firmware, no better lens coatings etc etc. Simply if you like Leica better, you buy it. But don't try to justify it as technically better, as this is simply not true.

I've had a D-lux earlier and would buy the Leica version over Panny any day of the week, but that's purely for the feeling & warranty.
