LX 5 or Digilux 2 ... Should I go back in years?

Hello,

I have been looking and reading a lot of the digilux 2. So far I started taking pictures with my panasonic lx5 but I have one major problem with it. I just cant get the feeling without the manuel controls and the missing viewfinder (I know I can get an additional one).

So I would like to have your honest recommendation LX 5 or a used digilux 2. I would sell my lx 5 set and get a used digilux 2.

I dont print out large posters with my cam. And I am just at the beginning of photography but I wanted to learn manuel controls and not relay on auto settings.

Thank you very much

I have one D-Lux 5 (idem LX5) and I find many qualities to him. Without any doubt it is an excellent device.

But I have also Digilux 2 as well as Lumix LC1.

If I were to separate me from one of the three, the choice would be really very difficult…: Confus:

I have a D-Lux4 and a Digilux 2. It would be hard to choose between the two. I've only been shooting with the D2 for a year, but I wouldn't trade it for any other camera in the world. However, that being said, it's the D-Lux4 that comes out with me 80% of the time, since it is so versatile and pocketable.

Picture-wise, most of my D2 pictures make me go "ohhh", the DL4's not so much.

It all depends on what you want out of your picture-endeavours, I guess.

I for one wouldn't part with either...on the contrary, I'm even contemplating of buying an X1 too! :D

I've owned both and feel that the LX-5 is much more versatile (of course, eleven years is an eternity in the digital tech world). I couldn't get the D 2 to focus properly in MF or AF modes, and shooting RAW, because of its interminable buffer times, was fairly disconcerting. In the end, I returned the D 2 (and I really wanted to like it) and I bring the LX-5 everywhere, even when shooting my M9. Its portability, f/2 lens and IQ are really top notch (and I owned the D Lux 3 and 4 before it).

Go for the D2 without a shadow of a doubt in my opinion. I have the DL5 too and while it's an excellent camera for what it is, its jpegs just can't compete with the D2's. But then very few cameras' jpegs can. I generally don't shoot raw with the D2 owing to the buffer lag unless it's a shot I particularly want to work up later pp but every time I take it out I enjoy the experience and it reminds me why I still have two of them. Yes, it's only a 5 MP sensor but it punches far above its weight.

I owned a D-lux3. Never missed it.

I still have a Digilux2. The D2 has a soul and makes you think about photography. Slow down and take your time.

And a D2 has some limits like any other cam too. So you will need a 2. 3. ... cam, but I don't think a D-Lux :-)

There is also a thread "Do Digilux 2 photos have a distinctive look?" Have a look at it.

I also have a D2 and a DLux 4 (and a Fuji X100.)

The D2 is for when I am not concerned about size/weight or lighting conditions.

The second (DLux) is for when I need something really portable.

The DLux 4 is nice (the DLux 5 even nicer) but the D2 is a legend. It makes me a better photographer.

If size and weight is not a problem (and you don't do too much low-light photography) then the D2 would be my choice - by a mile.

Just wanted to add that the D2 is a fairly light camera for it's size. Certainly it's heavier than the D-Lux 2, 3, 4, or 5, but it's lighter than the M8 and 9.:) It's not a small camera yet it doesn't seem bulky to me and I can hang it off my wrist with a wrist strap all day without the weight becoming a problem.

The D2 has probably the finest zoom ever glued to a camera body. They don't build them like this anymore. And the combination of user interface, manual controls, tactile feel is the best ever desigend for a digital camera. As someone posted, it has got soul. The LX 5 is just another point and shoot, not the worst, but not the best either as the newest generation of p&s has significantly larger sensors (Sony RX100), it will be forgotten tomorrow.

Before totally dismissing the D-Lux 5/LX-5, you may like to check out user reviews at B&H Photo and Amazon. Both score highly. Also search for pictures take with these cameras by googling "Hive Mind" plus camera model. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I didn't have LX5 or other similar Panasonic-Leica camera. I started with big DSLR, like Nikon D1H, to Leica Digilux 3, Sony Nex-3, and now I have Digilux 2 and Fujifilm x100.

After I got D2 in last January, my photography style changed completely, and I'm very glad about it. Yes, it's sensor is noisy and small, the camera is very slow when shooting RAW (and I always shoot raw), but controls and "handling" is the best I've ever encountered in any digital camera. I don't feel like I'm working on getting the shot - it just happens. Photography became much more relaxed process for me, based on composition and light only. No need for any menu parameters, no need for any unnecessary buttons. Just aperture ring, shutter dial (but almost all shots I make using Aperture priority) and shutter button. No confusion.

When I bought Fujifilm x100, I thought that it might be a modern replacement for my D2, and I won't want to use it anymore. But I was wrong. One day, I use x100, another - D2. It just feels a bit more analog and simple to me. And the battery lasts longer. And metering system is better (not sure why, but it just is for me). Maybe I will get better with it in time, but for now - D2 is still my favorite.

Well, I feel like I wnat to get more into serious photography but an dslr setup is not appealing to me.

I know that just cause I am using an leica I will not turn into a "mastershoot" photographer, but I hope it would be a camera I can learn on and gain experience.

Beacon, welcome to the forum!

As a long-time user of the Digilux 2 I know you would not be disappointed with its handling or results. For practical everyday photography it is a joy to use and delivers lovely results provided you don't regularly produce mural art size pictures.

I have a LX-5 and 2 D2s. The LX-5 is easier to carry and takes very good pictures; but, the D2 takes pictures that make you say ah. I have blown pics from D2 up to 13x19 and they look great. It is a very capable camera.

I have both and they complement each other.

The D-Lux5 I carry around with me everywhere; to work, on holidays, social occasions (the reasons I bought it for in the first place), The Digilux I use for everything else. Its handling is superb and encourages you to use all the facilities it has as they are so accessible. I just like using it and the images do not let you down, especially its colour rendition.

Then its so easy just to put D-Lux5 in your pocket (its very compact, which surprised me when I handled it) and snap away on program. Two different cameras.
