modamachina Posted January 8, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I happened to come across a summicron 35/2 "made in canada" the other day. I couldn't seem to find a serial anywhere on the lens (not at the front, not on the barrel). How do I date this lens? It doesn't come with the original box. Would this be the type IV summicron, or were there also other summicron 35's made in canada? And does $400 seem a fair price? It is clearly used, but lenses are 100%. Thank you! luigi bertolotti Posted January 8, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 8, 2009 Is it engraved "LEITZ LENS MADE IN CANADA" on the front ring ? If so is a version IV from early '80s - a famous lens, previous versions also came from Canada - and the s/n ought to be located on the back edge of the aperture control ring - normal that isn't in the front ring. If glass and mechanics are really OK, the price seems good to me.
jc_braconi Posted January 8, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 8, 2009 Is it writed SUMMICRON - M ?
modamachina Posted January 8, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted January 8, 2009 Hi Luigi and JC, Should all type IV summicrons have the serial on the aperture control ring, or just the canadian versions made before the type IV. The lens is back at the store so I'd have to call to have them check it, but I do believe it had "LEITZ LENS MADE IN CANADA" engraved and also SUMMICRON-M. Klaas. The last version IV Summicron 35 were marked LEICA only on the front ring, and with the s/n on it too (I don't know if they were all made in Solms, or if the new style was made also in Canada). I think "your" lens should look like this : Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! luigi bertolotti Posted January 9, 2009 Share #10 Posted January 9, 2009 Yes, it is. LEITZ CANADA, but MADE IN GERMANY. maybe only the filter ring...
modamachina Posted January 9, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted January 9, 2009 Hi everyone, Thank you for all your replies. I just phoned the store and heard they sold the lens... But seeing your pictures I am positive it was a first version type IV made in canada. Well, I did think about buying a new summicron-ASPH or summilux-ASPH anyway. But as so many I can't make up my mind... The reason I would by the Lux is for the "just in case I should need the 1.4"-situation... Money isn't an issue. But I do have doubts about the size. It would be nice if I can use it as a walk-around-lens on my M8. Another thing I like is shadow detail ('cron better here?). I already have a 28 elmarit - ASPH. m4-2 Posted January 9, 2009 Share #12 Posted January 9, 2009 maybe only the filter ring... No, the lenshood too. I have this lens for more than 30 years, yesterday i saw the first time that it shows `MADE IN GERMANY`. jup.
