Lens cap for 135/f4 Tele-Elmar (hood fitted)?

I am looking for a lens cap to use on my 135/f4 Tele-Elmar, when I have the 12575 metal clip on hood in its using, rather than reversed/storage position. I have the correct Leica plastic cap for the lens with the hood in its stored position, which has two cut outs for the release buttons of the lens hood. The cap I would like to find, would need to be a slip on 58mm cap. I would prefer a metal Leica cap rather than a generic plastic one. Anyone know if such a cap was made and if so either/or a part number or for which lens it was originally made. The 75 Summarit hood cap is just too large.

The plastic version is the only one I know of which will fit over the reversed lensshade. Since the lens has the standard outside-diameter for the E- 39 mm lensfront, the standard metalcap which also fits the 35 and 50 mm SUMMICRON, the 90 mm Elmar and Elmarit, will fit, but without a shade.

On second reading, I see, you want a metalcap over the mounted
shade. I do not think they made one for this specific purpose ...

Nothing to do, I think, with the 12575 mounted on... I never saw such an accessory Leitz or not. But the 12575 "mouth" is perfectly round ... try to verify the diameter..I think some home made solution with a 3rd party plastic cap and, if necessary, some rubber strip can be put together

I have a couple of those hoods one is lined with felt and the other one has ingraved ridges and both of them a Leica 55mm pushbutton cap grabs just fine. Prolly any 55mm snapcap will work. But if your stuck on a metal one and that it must fit over the outside then I can't help you.

I think the answer is to use a 75 Summarit cap and line it with an additional layer. Sadly I gave away all my stock of black silk velvet, which I used to use for replacing light seals, to a friend rebuilding a Speed Graflex. No doubt I will now get a heart attack when I ask the price of a replacement 75mm Summarit cap.

Thanks for the idea but sadly it is not going to work for me. My 12575 hood is absolutely smooth matte black paint inside with no ridges or soft lining. I don't think that the tabs of the cap will grip. What I am thinking of doing is using the cap off my 75 Summarit and modifying it as I described above. The 75 Summarit cap, the one supplied with the optional lens hood, is totally useless on the Summarit and falls off every time you take it out of the bag, if you have reversed the hood on the lens for space requirements. I will then see if I can find a nice tight fitting plastic hood for the Summarit.

You can buy plastic caps with specific inside diameters. Try measuring the outside diameter of the hood and looking for that cap size.

If you search for "schneider cap" on the B+H web site, you will see there is a huge selection of sizes.

Rats! I never seen one like that. Imagine, at least three different versions of the same simple hood. I suppose that's what makes Leica so interesting to collectors, but it's gotta be infuriating to those who actually use the gear.

My guess is that a lot of these accessory items were not made by Leica themselves but farmed out to one or more of the hundreds of small engineering shops around at that time in the region. Leica may just have specified "non-reflecting surface on inside of hood" and left it up to the particular shop making them, as to how they achieved it.

However, success - a friend in the next village also has the 135 Tele-Elmar (he bought his after seeing how well it worked on my M8) and he has the ridged hood. We have done a swap of our otherwise identical hoods, so I can now use the inside tabs cap. Do you know which lens this cap came off so I can order one?

The # embossed on the back is 14289. It's standard equipment with any Leica M or R lens that takes an e55 filter. They're $30 retail here in the US. I got it used for much less.

Thank you that is very useful. The person who is making an SNHOO filter adapter for me, has a S/H one in stock. I have asked him to put it aside and send it to me with the completed adapter.

FYI I have another one on a lens, same SKU# embossed on the inside, except that one has "LEITZ" printed in small capitol letters around the outer edge in front, not "Leica" in big scripture on the front as in the picture, so again there looks to be more than one version though they fit the same. I mention it in case the writing matters to you you may want to ask which one the guy has.

Wilson, in searching my semi-on, semi-off memory banks, I seem to remember the lens hood reversed for storage and there was a plastic cap which covered it and the lens. I don't recall ever seeing a metal one, but that certainly doesn't mean other examples didn't have one.

You are quite right, the supplied lens hood reverses for storage and has a plastic cap which fits with the hood reversed. The cap has two cut outs for the release tabs of the lens hood. This cap does not fit if you don't have the hood reversed. However, if you have the lens on the camera, it is a bit of a performance to take off the cap, release the hood, reverse and refit it, every time you want to take a photo. I wanted a cap I could leave on the lens with the hood in its using position. Thanks to Jimmy's information and a friend, who was willing to swap hoods, it looks as if that is now on its way to being accomplished.
