My girlfriend discovered her grandfather's old Leica in Greece - it is:
Leica D.R.P. Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Germany, Nr. 630166 The lense has the text : Ernst Leitz GmbH Wetzlar Summarit f=5cm 1:15 Nr.999797 Any idea where I can find more information? Value? Age? Useability? Photos? Specs? I would appreciate any information, Thanks, David |

The IIIf is a nice camera, you can work with..some times the older cameras needs some cleaning of the shutter, but then they are working for the next years...

If you'll find it in good conditions, this is a very pleasant camera... and has a certain interest for it belongs to the first batch of IIIf with the new shutter (has 1/25.. 1/50 ... 1/75, batch started at 615.000) ; very probable it hasn't the self timer, which was added as standard later on (but could be added to the existing models of your kind, so it could even have it).
and the Summarit, if with clean glass, is a fine lens to use: was the topo luminosity lens at that times, and, btw, yours has also a fine number (999.xxx ...collectors like those "near-round" numbers... ).Lot of lenses can be easily find on the market for this camera, and rather common items like the Elmar 90, the Hektor 135, the Summaron 35 are not too costly and very usable too. |

Thanks very much for the advice and information - this is going to be a lot of fun. And, yes, there are many, many lenses & accessories for this camera on the market - I especially like the (very expensive) Leicavit rapid winder..... This morning I got a photo of the actual camera - she says the leather is BROWN - and I have found no references to a BROWN IIIf RD - and thoughts on that?
Thanks again, David |
