M3 baseplate/take up spool not original

I purchased another M3 (later dual stroke) and when I opened the base I found that it differed from my other M3. It sure looked like a newer model baseplate and the take up spool was different also.

If anyone can shed some light on this particual equipment and whether this make any difference, it would be appreciated.

This M3 base-plate is fitted with the Leitz produced - 'Rapid film loading system for all LEICA M models (except M5, M4 and MDa).' This alternative assembly allowed users of earlier M models to mimic the rapid-loading system introduced with the M4 / MDa in 1967.

Thanks for the info. I wanted my M to be original, so I'm not ecstatic that it's been modified. But, this is pretty minor, so it's not a big deal. I don't see how this little doo-hicky will do anything that the standard baseplate wont do. I guess we'll see.

What it does differently is allow you to load film without removing the take-up spool (though in my experience it doesn't work nearly as well as the arrangement in the M4 onwards).

Returning the camera to its original state is simply a matter of acquiring a standard take-up spool and removing the plastic fitting from the baseplate.

Really? I do have an extra take-up real.

I've had no problems loading the standard reel. I may just do that. I didn't even know there would be any demand for the unit. Thanks for the tip.
